Nikon Coolpix P5000 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.58 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "...the P5000 offers pretty much everything the Canon G7 does - with SLR-like levels of control - in a package that is truly pocketable. This puts it, essentially, in a class of its own, and this is why the promise of Nikon quality and full photographic control in such a small package caused such excitement when the P5000 was announced earlier this year.
...the P5000 is a product that - like so many we look at - has an achilles heel that we feel is important enough to reduce its rating, because it has a serious effect on the overall usability of an otherwise excellent camera. Put simply it feels sluggish in use and has focus speeds that would have been considered 'average' 5 years ago. ..."

| Review (Summary): "Aimed at photographers who want more control than is offered by many digital cameras, the Nikon P5000 offers a sensor resolution of 10 megapixels coupled to a Nikkor-branded 3.5x optical zoom lens with optical vibration reduction - a useful addition that helps avoid blurring caused by camera shake in low light situations. There's also a sizable 2.5 inches LCD display with anti-reflective coating on the Nikon P5000, and both Shutter- and Aperture-priority modes plus a true Manual mode to help unleash your creative side.
... Size is one of the Nikon Coolpix P5000's strongest arguments. Packing this much photographic control and quality into such a light and compact form is an unusual achievement, and its images were beautiful. Time will tell if the Nikon P5000 is a classic Coolpix, but meanwhile, let's call it a "Dave's Pick" by a nose." |

| Review (Summary): "With cutting-edge capabilities like face-priority autofocus, optical image stabilization, and full-resolution sensitivity settings as high as ISO 2000 to augment its manual and semimanual exposure options, the P5000 fits some mighty attractive features into its 8.1-ounce, 3.9x2.5x1.6 inches (WHD) frame. ...
Poor performance really drags down the Nikon Coolpix P5000, and unless you absolutely need a hot shoe for an external flash, it's hard to recommend when compared to the less expensive, zippier Canon PowerShot A710 IS, with its faster and longer 6x zoom lens." |

| Review (Summary): "Back in the bad old days when DLSRs cost over £2000 the prosumer bridge camera was pretty much what the average snapper could aspire to. Designed as a bridge between the world of compacts and SLRs these cameras were feature rich, in small bodies. The Nikon P5000 is almost back into that category with its modes and resolution, but is resolutely still a compact with the small lens and zoom rocker.
The color rendition is good, and largely what you'd expect, with those bright blues designed for pleasing results straight out of the box. What is an issue is noise with that 10Mp resolution, and here the results are not that impressive. While the levels that are visible at ISO64 and 100 don't really cause concern, it is alarming to see colour shifts at ISO400 and the ISO3200 mode is more like an artists impression than a photo. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "The Nikon Coolpix P5000 offers total exposure flexibility in an attractive and durable body with a magnesium alloy front panel. It has a clean design with lots of controls that make the camera intuitive to use. The textured finish looks professional and the grip is comfortable.
Not only does the Nikon Coolpix P5000 look great and handle well, it also strikes a good balance between ease of use and richness of features: it is point-and-shoot easy to use and also packed-full of practical features advanced photographers like to have in their digital cameras." |

| Review (Summary): "The P5000 is a rugged and practical-looking medium-sized 10-megapixel compact with a 3.5x zoom, f/2.7–5.3 lens (equivalent to 36-126mm), optical image stabilization, a full range of manual exposure and metering options, an optical viewfinder and a hot shoe for an external flash. ...
... The Nikon CoolPix P5000 isn’t the top-drawer semi-pro compact that many were hoping for, but it is a well-made and well-specified camera suitable for more experienced photographers. Its lack of performance and slow AF system are handicaps, but comfortable handling, a good range of options and features, and excellent photographic results more than compensate." |

| Review (Summary): "On paper the Nikon P5000 seems like an ideal camera for the experienced photographer who does not want to carry the complete SLR equipment, but demands a lot from a camera. With a 10 Megapixel resolution, the Nikon Coolpix P5000 is up to date with the latest trends. This resolution gives more than enough space to be able to make large prints or to edit the image extensively. For the advanced photographer it is also convenient that besides being able to do everything automatically, the camera's aperture and shutter speed preferences can be operated manually. ...
The power of the Nikon Coolpix P5000 is found in the camera itself. The camera will feel comfortable for most photographers, and that makes it worth it. You have to settle for a few shortcomings, but if you can live with that, you truly have a great camera. The Nikon Coolpix P5000 is in my opinion one of the nicest compact cameras available right now, it is really well built. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "A car company once asked if they could “build one for you”. A nationwide burger chain let patrons "have it your way." Nikon isn't in the automotive or fast food business, but point and shoot photographers who want to let their camera do all of the work, none of the work or some of the work, rejoice! Nikon just built a P&S camera that lets you have it your way. You might want to put down that burger and drive to your nearest camera store to check out the Coolpix P5000. ...
The Nikon Coolpix P5000 provides a 10 megapixel sensor, excellent image and color quality, and an ergonomically excellent camera in a compact, easily portable package. Not only does the camera come with the full auto and specialty modes found in virtually every P&S, but a complete set of manual controls as well. This combined with the optional wide and telephoto converters gives the P5000 a versatility that could attract a varied group of shooters: those new to digital imagery can use the auto functions and be assured of quality images, while photographers who want or need the ability to go semi-automatic or manual get their wish as well." |
