Kodak EasyShare 5300 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The EasyShare 5300 marks Kodak's bold entry into the inkjet printer space. Their first printers, all of which are all-in-ones, look fairly generic from the outside. Where Kodak is trying to be different from the other guys is in terms of value. Inkjet printer manufacturers are famous for giving you the printer for cheap and then making you pay through the nose for ink. Kodak's charging a fairly reasonable price for the printer ($199 in the case of the EasyShare 5300) and they're selling the ink for much less than everyone else ($10 for B&W, $15 for color). That's not for a half-filed cartridge either - it's a full tank. ...

All things considered, the EasyShare 5300 is a decent printer that first and foremost needs some bugs worked out. Once Kodak takes care of those (and I assume they will, as they've already updated the firmware once), the 5300 will be more competitive. At this point, though, it's not the best choice for your hard-earned money, no matter how much it saves you on ink and paper. ..."

Review Diary (Summary): "Kodak is betting consumers will pay a $50 premium on the hardware to save money on the consumables. The pigment inks are sold as a $9.99 black ink cartridge and a $14.99 color cartridge. They print on the company's three-tiered porous paper line coded on the back with gold diagonal lines whose line weight and distance between lines tell the printer what kind of paper it's printing on. The cheapest paper makes a 10 cent 4x6 print, the tier-two paper a 15 cent print and the high-end paper a 25 cent 4x6. ...

... Wow. Now that was a nice print. Sharp as a tack. No noticeable dots from the inkjet. Instant dry (porous paper but with pigment inks not dyes, so they're archival). ..."

Review (Summary): "When Kodak announced its new EasyShare line of all-in-ones (AIOs), it garnered a lot of attention. Not only was Kodak venturing into new territory with AIOs aimed for the home and home office, it claimed its ink prices were low enough to cut printing costs by up to half compared with the competition. I tested the first EasyShare AIO - the Kodak EasyShare 5300 All-In-One printer ($200 street) - and the news is largely good. The 5300 may not be a home run, but it's at least arguably a triple, and that's not bad for a first time at bat.

Photo prints were good enough to count as true photo quality in almost all cases, despite some visible dithering in the form of subtle graininess. The one exception was a monochrome photo, which showed a slight tint, but that won't be an issue if you don't care about monochrome photos. ..."
