Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.67 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Pentax K100D is one of a slew of budget DSLRs with advanced features currently on the market. The 6-megapixel K100D has sensor-shift shake reduction and an excellent autofocus system, which boasts nine cross-points. ...
The Pentax K100D is just what an entry-level DSLR should be - simple to use and functional enough to take good pictures. Pentax deserves praise for putting such a good autofocus system in an inexpensive camera. The combination of the autofocus system and Shake Reduction system will increase the percentage of sharp shots for many users. ..."

| Review: "the K100D and its stablemate the K110D ... both are 6-megapixel entry-level cameras aimed at newcomers to digital SLR photography. The only difference between the two models is that the K100D features Pentax's newly developed moving sensor Shake Reduction system. The new models will replace the consumer-orientated cameras in the *ist range, including the DS2. Pentax's other new camera, the 10-megapixel K10D due to go on sale this month, will replace the aging *ist D.
It may be the cheapest DSLR on the market, but the Pentax K100D isn't short of advanced features, performance or image quality, and can comfortably hold its own against the Nikon D40. Build quality, design and handling are all superb, and the Shake Reduction system is as good as any on the market. If you're looking for a good entry-level DSLR with the option to build up a kit, then look no further." |

| Review: "Although the Pentax K100D greatly resembles its predecessor, the Shake Reduction certainly isn't the only difference or innovation. While the *ist DS2 still featured a prism in the viewfinder, Pentax have equipped the Pentax K100D with a penta-mirror instead. The light is now sent to the lens via mirrors; a construction that is both cheaper and more light-weight. Unfortunately, however, this often also tends to negatively affect the brightness of the viewfinder...
The true power of the Pentax K100D lies in the image quality, which is -after all- the most important aspect of the camera. We should point out that with its 6 Megapixels, the K100D does trail slightly behind on the competition. Then again, does that really matter? The 6 Megapixels easily suffice to make an A3 size print, especially with the quality the Pentax K100D has to offer. Both the color rendition and the sharpness prove excellent. If you capture your photos in RAW, you will be able to get even more from the camera. Even when working with higher sensitivities, the K100D performs superbly indeed, in fact, remarkably well for a camera with a relatively old sensor..." |

| Review: "The K100D and K110D digital SLRs were announced in May 2006, aimed as a straight replacement for the *ist DS series (actually the DS2) these two SLRs are designed to appeal to the affordable end of the digital SLR market but don't compromise on features. The only difference between the K100D and K110D are that the K100D includes Pentax's own CCD-shift type 'Shake Reduction' system, where as the K110D does not.
Not only has Pentax improved in-camera image processing but they appear to have overtaken some of the competition, the amount of detail delivered is about as much as we could expect to see from a six megapixel CCD. On top of this they've also taken the sensible compromise of using a minimal amount of noise reduction and not turning down sharpening at higher sensitivities which means you get almost as much detail at ISO 1600 as you would at ISO 200. This combination means that assuming the 'input image' is sharp (good lens and/or stopped down slightly) you're going to get a great detailed image..." |

| Review: "Pentax has introduced its digital doppelganger, the Pentax K100D. Point & shoot digital cameras have dominated the photography marketplace for most of the past decade, but reasonably priced entry level dSLRs are now the fastest growing segment of that lucrative market. Entry-level digital SLRs allow photographers to move to the next creative level by providing affordable access to modular imaging devices and interchangeable lenses.
The K100D is up against some pretty stiff competition including Canon's Rebel XT and Nikon's D50. At 6 megapixels the K100D looks to be holding the short straw in this contest since most of its rivals sport at least 8 megapixel resolution, but the K100D is fairly cheap ($699 with 18mm-55mm/f/3.5-f5.6 Pentax DA zoom), dependable and robustly built, simple to operate, and capable of producing consistently excellent results.
Serious amateur shooters may have a few issues, but family snap-shooters, P&S digicam users just making the jump to a dSLR, student photographers, casual shutterbugs, and old timers with a collection of Pentax glass will appreciate the K100D's reasonable price, robust construction, operational simplicity, use of available anywhere AA batteries, image stabilization, and solid performance." |

| Review: "About 30 years ago, Pentax released the K1000, a film SLR that would become legendary as an inexpensive workhorse camera with which countless students would-and still do-learn the finer aspects of photography. It's no longer in production, though you can find plenty of them on eBay. Now, Pentax has brought the K back, ditching the perplexingly unpronounceable *istD moniker in favor of its new K100D and K110D 6.1-megapixel digital SLRs.
In true contrarian style, the K100D is the more expensive of the two, thanks to Pentax's own sensor-shifting optical image stabilization. Aside from that, the two SLRs are identical. Both feature 2.5-inch LCD screens, 11-point autofocus, and sensitivity as high as ISO 3,200; and they accept the legions of Pentax lenses, including fully manual lenses dating back further than the K1000. The unwashed, pixel-obsessed masses will no doubt complain about the 6.1-megapixel CCD sensor, but it's still more than enough for letter-size prints, which should be plenty for most casual shooters. Plus, at this price, it's one of the best bargains in the dSLR market." |

| Review: "Announced on the 22nd of May 2006, the Pentax K100D is a 6.1 megapixel digital SLR camera with a 2.5" screen and built in Shake Reduction sensor - it will accept any Pentax K-Series mount lens and is named after the popular Pentax K1000 film SLR released in the 70s. The SMC Pentax DA 18-55mm lens I tested it with is equivalent to 27-82mm on a 35mm camera.
The Pentax K100D Digital SLR is a great digital camera. It feels very comfortable in hand, and produces very natural pictures with little noise and rich pleasing colors. This camera is very easy to use (in auto mode), and would definitely suit a beginner. The camera offers good battery life, with very good controls and good build quality. The addition of Shake Reduction through an anti-shake CCD sensor means more photos are likely to come out blur free - image stabilization is an excellent feature to have and is especially useful indoors in low light...." |

| Review: (Updated 10/24/2006) "The Pentax K100D, along with its sibling the K110D, are the company's first DSLR models to forgo the rather confusing "*istD" branding. Both share an identical (newly developed) body and feature set, with the exception of an anti-shake mechanism - found on the K100D, but not the K110D.
It's good to see Pentax come out swinging, offering a tight, affordable camera for consumers. For my part, I'm still rubbing my chin about the concept of the K100D with a 43mm or 40mm prime lens for daily carry in a waistpack, chucking the point-and-shoot digicam in favor of a larger sensor and higher quality optics, not to mention the ease of AA batteries. Now that this review is over, I'm going to twist that silver Pentax FA 43mm Limited lens back on and test my theory until they make me return it." |

Review: "On the outside, the new Pentax K100D ($599 body only, $699 with lens) looks a lot like its predecessor, the *ist DS2. Pentax didn't just change the name, though (but I'm glad they did) - inside the K100D is a CCD-shift image stabilization system. This system, which Pentax calls Shake Reduction, lets you take sharper photos at slower shutter speeds than on an unstabilized camera - and with ANY Pentax lens ever made.
I pretty much covered all the negative points about the K100D in the preceding paragraphs. With a street price of a little over $600 (with the kit lens), the Pentax K100D is quite a bargain. It doesn't have the resolution of most of the competition, but it offers solid build quality, great photo quality, and image stabilization for not much money. If you've got a Pentax lens collection this camera is a no-brainer, and if you're buying your first D-SLR then it's also worth a look. The only people to whom I'd say "stay away!" would be those who take a lot of fast action shots, as the buffer memory fills up way too quickly." |

| Review: "Pentax's K100D fits in between the K110D and the K10D in the company's line-up of digital SLR cameras. The K100D has a 6.1 megapixel resolution, a 2.5-inch LCD monitor, and an image stabilization system at the CCD level.
The Pentax K100D is a camera that has attracted a lot of interest from photographers looking to purchase a relatively economical dSLR. Whereas its 6.1 megapixel resolution may seem to be only "average", in comparison to many current dSLR cameras, the K100D's image quality leaves nothing to be desired." |

Review (Summary): "Want to take more professional pictures without having to empty your bank account?
Last year's beginners' digital SLR from Pentax has been spruced up and given a Super name tag, while the price for a kit, including the camera and an 18-55mm zoom lens, has been reduced considerably.
Unusually for a budget SLR, it's possible to keep track of settings using the narrow screen atop the camera in addition to the clear 2.5in screen on the back. Put simply, the Pentax K100D Super is more of a digital camera than you’d expect for the money, and as it can make prints up to A3 size, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as a first step towards better photographic results." |
