Fujifilm FinePix F40fd Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The F40fd is an 8 megapixel version of the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd, itself an update to the Fujifilm FinePix F30. The "fd" signifies that the camera now features "Face Detection" focus and exposure control. The F40fd is a compact digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens and a large 2.5" screen. The camera has the ability to take photos at upto ISO 2000, while most ordinary digital cameras stop at ISO 400.

... The camera is one of very few to include usable high ISO modes of ISO 1600 and ISO 2000, and noticably less noise than the competition at all ISO settings upto ISO 800 (The only other cameras offering similar performance are either Digital SLRs or other Fujifilm FinePix digital cameras!). It has excellent responsiveness and is designed to be able to take great photos in almost every situation. ..."

Review (Summary): "With the Fuji Finepix F40fd, Fuji augmented the resolution of its very successful F-series of ultra-compact digital cameras. Without compromising too much, the F40 boasts a maximum ISO of 2000 at its full 8 megapixels resolution. ...

... The Fuji Finepix F40 is an excellent ultra-compact. Despite not being the best, the F40 produces low-noise images with plenty of details. Add to that its good speed of operation, good battery-life and you have a great ultra-compact digital camera. ..."

Review (Summary): "The FD40fd is equipped with an 8.3 megapixel Super CCD, a 3X optical zoom and features the ubiquitous 2.5-inch LCD monitor that has now become a de-facto standard for high-end compact cameras. But, in a departure from recent Fujifilm cameras, the FD40fd stands out by having a memory card slot that is compatible with both xD and SD memory cards.

The ease of use that is evident in all aspects of the F40fd's design is also underlined by its Face Detection system. With this camera, the Face Detection system is now remarkably capable, and when active, picks out faces in the frame even before the shutter release is pressed, placing a green frame around them and following them until they move out of frame. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The F40fd ...is an 8.3-megapixel model featuring Fuji's 1/1.6-in SuperCCD HR VI sensor and Real Photo Processor II engine, as well as Fuji's hardware-based face detection technology. Other features include a 2.5-in 230k LCD monitor, 2000 ISO maximum sensitivity, and interestingly the ability to use both xD-Picture and SD memory cards, although it does NOT accept SDHC cards.

... Fujifilm continues to demonstrate that it is the only manufacturer that has successfully addressed the issue of image noise. The Finepix F40fd is an attractively designed, extremely well made camera with a good range of features and outstanding image quality. It is a bit lacking in overall speed, but its exceptional low-light and high-ISO performance are better than any other compact on the market - except another Fuji."

Review (Summary): "Fujifilm was among the first camera makers to push up to ISO 1,600 and beyond in compact cameras, thanks to its effective noise-reduction algorithms. That resulted in a parade of double-digit F-series cameras that employ Fuji's Real Photo Technology-a group of features aimed at shooting usable photos in low-light, among other, situations. ...

... The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd is a nice, but not exceptional, point-and-shoot camera. Most casual snapshooters will likely be pleased with the images they get from this model. If you're willing to spend a little more, Canon's PowerShot SD800 IS will get you optical image stabilization and an optical viewfinder."

Digital Camera Info 7.65 05-30-07 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "The newest model in Fujifilm’s F-series includes all the bells and whistles from the older cameras and adds a few cool features too. The Fujifilm FinePix F40fd has face detection and high ISO sensitivity like its predecessors. It adds 8.3 megapixel resolution and accepts both xD-Picture and SD memory cards. The F40fd was announced in January 2007 and now sells for $299. ...

The 8.3-megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F40fd has more resolution than its F-series siblings and proved through performance tests that its new 1/1.6-inch image sensor is worthy of the hype; it kept noise to a minimum and resolution to a maximum. Pictures were sharply focused and properly exposed with the help of the face detection auto focus system and the vast ISO range. ..."

Pocket-lint 7.50 05-24-07 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "The F40fd, here in its gunmetal grey metal-bodied guise, is a stylish high-tech compact that offers a tempting level of specification and performance at a good price. The new model has a boosted resolution over the 6.3-megapixel F30/F31fd siblings with a new 8.3-megapixel-resolution sensor and Fuji's new face detection AF system built into the camera's processor thus making the AF very fast and surprisingly accurate in use. ...

Overall, image quality is good for the resolution, with particular emphasis on the higher ISO shots where noise is controlled well up to ISO 800 and detail retained well, thanks to sensitive image-noise processing. White balance is excellent in all but some mixed indoor lighting, color rendition is, in a word, accurate and while there is some mild purple fringing issues and slight barrel distortion on the lenses wide end, the F40fd is as accomplished an 8-megapixel model as you'll find on the market today. ..."

Review (Summary): "The FinePix F40fd ($299) is a compact, stylish camera that replaces the FinePix F20, which served as the "little brother" to the highly-rated FinePix F30. The beauty of these cameras isn't really their design, lens, or feature set. Rather, it's their unique SuperCCD HR sensor with its hexagonal photo sites, which delivers much better high ISO performance than cameras that use regular CCDs. What this means in the real world is that you can get better quality photos in low light situations than on your typical compact camera. ...

... The bottom line is that the FinePix F40fd is a capable point-and-shoot camera, best suited to people who take low light photos and aren't planning on turning them into huge prints. It's not the fastest camera around, there are no manual controls, and the low ISO photos are a little grainy, but for those who aren't always shooting in bright outdoor light, a few tradeoffs are acceptable."

Review (Summary): "Fuji's latest point-and-shoot sports a slimmed-down, stylish body, support for SD cards (in addition to xD), and some great features, including face detection. ...

The F40fd's performance impressed me. Resolution averaged 1,800 lines, which is on target for an 8MP camera. This is a big improvement over the 8MP Casio Exilim EX-Z850, which scored only 1,600 and produced slightly fuzzy images. The F40fd's 3.1-second bootup and 2.7-second recycle times were both quite good, but not the fastest we've seen. I was very happy to see that there was absolutely no shutter lag. ..."
