Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W55 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The 7.2 megapixel Sony DSC-W55 features a 3x optical zoom lens with Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar branding, 2.5" 115,000 pixel LCD display, optical viewfinder, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 1,000 equivalent. Auto and Programmed Auto exposure modes are offered, as well as seven scene modes (Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Beach, Snow, High Sensitivity, Soft Snap).

Particularly for a camera that you can carry in most any pocket, the Sony DSC-W55 boasts a lot of features, and the controls are laid out well. Offering good sharpness and color, a strong feature set, and available in four colors (black, pink, silver, or blue), all at an attractive price, the Sony DSC-W55 has a lot going for it. ..."

Review: "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 ($199) is an updated version of last year's popular DSC-W50 digital camera....So what's new on the DSC-W55 compared to its predecessor? As is often the case with new camera models, the resolution has gone up - this time from 6.0 to 7.2 Megapixels. The camera has nearly twice as much built-in memory as before, going from 32MB to 56MB. Battery life took a tiny hit, but most people won't even notice. And finally, the camera comes in four colors instead of two, so if you've been wanting a baby blue camera... well, now's your chance.

The Cyber-shot DSC-W55 is a 100% point-and-shoot camera, with no manual controls at all. That's a shame, since white balance and shutter speed controls would've made some of our test photos look a lot better. What you will find are seven scene modes, including a high sensitivity mode, though I recommend you avoid the latter and just increase the ISO manually instead. The W55's continuous shooting mode is nothing to write home about, with cameras from Canon and Panasonic giving you unlimited shooting at higher frame rates. The movie mode on the W55 hasn't changed since the W50, and that's just fine - it's very good."

Review (Summary): "Against slimmer, more stylish cameras such as the significantly more expensive Cyber-shot DSC-T50, the W55 won't win any beauty contests. Behind the pretty face hides a blocky, half-plastic compact camera that's built more for ease of use than for fashion. Its 5.1-ounce body, at less than an inch thick, fits easily into almost any pocket. With the exception of its irritatingly recessed power and review buttons, the W55's controls feel large, responsive, and easy to manipulate....

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 doesn't have any notable or unique features, but its quick performance and solid picture quality make it a fine choice budget choice, plus it offers a larger screen and a nicer finish for just $20 more than the W35..."
