Canon Powershot SD1000 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "Inspired by the original IXUS model, the new Canon IXUS 70 offers a 7.1 megapixel sensor, 3x zoom lens equivalent to 35-105mm, and a 2.5 inch LCD screen. Canon's DIGIC III image processor, which is also used in the DSLR range, powers the IXUS 70 behind the scenes, and also provides the camera's Face Detection and Noise Reduction technologies.

...On paper it doesn't seem to offer anything different to a lot of other, cheaper cameras - 3x optical zoom lens, 7 megapixel sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen - but pick the IXUS 70 up and there is an undeniable sense of quality which exceeds most of the competition. Just as impressively, Canon have managed to include a large LCD screen and small optical viewfinder despite the tiny dimensions of the IXUS 70. Unfortunately image quality isn't quite up to the high standards set by the rest of the camera, with image noise being the main issue. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH ($299) is an ultra-compact camera with a throwback design resembling the original film-based ELPH. Despite its high model number, the SD1000 isn't the top-of-the-line ELPH: the SD900 still holds that title (though some SD800 owners may disagree with that).

Photo quality was very good overall, though there are the usual tradeoffs that come from having a tiny lens and sensor. On the positive side, photos had pleasing color and sharpness, minimal purple fringing, and well-controlled noise through ISO 400. The negatives include corner blurriness (which most ultra-compacts have) and a slight tendency to overexpose (in my opinion). Redeye is certainly a big problem on the camera, though you can remove this annoyance fairly well using the tool in playback mode."

Review (Summary): " has what it takes to stand out from the pack? Generally, it's one that exhibits both excellent quality and nimble performance. But that's not the whole story. Other features, such as a useful and beautiful design plus functions that are enjoyable to use, can really make the difference. In the case of Canon's new 7.1-megapixel PowerShot SD1000, you get most, if not all, of these essentials.

My lab test pictures also displayed excellent results. There was very little noise in flash or daylight shots. I noticed just the right amount of saturation as well as very accurate color matching, with no color casts. There was very little fringing, either, and the SD1000 rendered my simulated outdoor picture of trees set against a bright blue sky well. ..."

Review: "...Despite its four-digit number, Canon positions the PowerShot SD1000 as a replacement for last year's SD600, which also puts it below the new SD750 in the company's line. Resolution has been bumped up to 7.1 megapixels from the SD600's 6MP, but despite an almost identical controls layout (though different cosmetic design), Canon made a few changes on the inside.

Despite our minor gripes, the PowerShot SD1000 is a top-notch compact camera for its price range. Most users will be pleased with its excellent image quality and the useful, if not extensive, feature set...."

Review (Summary): "The SD1000 is one of the newest editions of the ELPH series that celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The film-based original broke the design mold with its classic "box and circle" styling. Now, the SD1000 Digital ELPH has returned to these retro roots on the outside, but inside, it's obviously a completely different breed.

Anyone looking for a good point-and-forget digicam should put the Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital ELPH high on the list. It's not the fastest camera in the world, but it works quickly enough, even with the flash blazing away. Photo quality is of the classic Canon style, which I like very much. I'm sure zillions of shutterbugs will like it too. "

Hands-on Preview: "In February 2007, Canon announced the PowerShot SD750 and SD1000 digital cameras to replace the older SD630 and SD600 models. Don’t let the numbers fool you: the SD750 is the fancier camera with its 3-inch LCD screen compared to the SD1000’s 2.5-inch LCD. The Digital Elphs both have 7.1 megapixels and Digic III image processors with face detection technology.

The Canon SD750 and SD1000 fall in the middle of the Digital Elph line with their standard feature set and 7.1 megapixels. The models above these have flashier features like optical image stabilization and longer lenses. Those below in the lineup have smaller LCD screens with less resolution."
