Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 Review

Review Summary
The Panasonic DMC-FX5 is the first camera to date to offer a very compact size and yet have a 3X stabilized Leica lens. Aside from a couple of doors, the DMC-FX5's body is entirely clad in metal. The front of the camera sports a finely grooved design of concentric circles that radiate from the lens.

| There's little else to add about the DMC-FX5. It's a simple but high quality pocket camera that will appeal to folks who'd like to buy a Leica, but don't have pockets deep enough. Because it's not a real Leica, one or two shortcuts have been taken - most noticeably with the plastic tripod bush, which is a retrograde step from the metal version on the camera's predecessor. |

| The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 comes equipped with a high-grade, 3x optical, 3x digital zoom Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens to refract images onto its 1/2.5-inch CCD. The utilized image sensor hosts 4.23 megapixels with the potential for video and audio recording. There is a 1.5-inch LCD screen with 114,000 pixels of resolution included on the back of this model. Its size and controls make it a great imager for the user who has a comfortable knowledge of digital cameras and wants a well-designed camera body. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX5 retails for $449.99. |

| The Panasonic DMC-FX5 is a very compact and well-crafted camera, but some of its design elements may be of debatable value. The metal front of the camera, and the bevelled trim around the lens, are deeply etched with very sharp concentric grooves that catch the skin as the camera is handled. |

Kodak's EasyShare LS743, our current Editors' Choice among point-and-shoots, is a better camera for about the same money. |
