Casio EXILIM EX-S770 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "As the newest Exilim in the Casio's Card series, the S770 brings with it 7.2 megapixels and a wide 2.8-inch LCD screen. It carries on some traditions of the line, such as the skinny 0.7-inch profile, trendy appearance, and almost countless numbers of Best Shot scene modes.

...The 7.2-megapixel Casio S770 has some advantages over its predecessor: a bigger 2.8-inch LCD, dual recording buttons to shoot movies anytime, widescreen movies, and an interesting "data transport" function that allows users to view documents, maps, pictures, and web pages from the camera's big screen. Basically, the S770 is a typical ultra-compact digital camera with its standard resolution and 3x optical zoom lens, but it adds a few frills. If you're going to use those frills, then the $299 price tag isn't all that bad. If all you want is a camera and you won't ever transfer documents (or you have a Mac and can't transfer data), then there are other digital cameras that can fulfill your needs for a cheaper price."

Review: "Casio is known for its small cameras and the Exilim EX-S770 carries on that tiny tradition. This 7-megapixel shooter has a few irritating bits, but its size, style, and speed make it a good choice for a pocket point and shoot. The S770 succeeds last year's Exilim EX-S600 by offering a higher resolution and an improved interface.

The Casio Exilim EX-S770's slim, stylish form is hard to beat. It's colorful, completely metallic, and small enough to take anywhere. It delivered excellent performance in our lab tests. Unfortunately, its iffy photo quality dulls the camera's overall glow...."

Review: "The Casio Exilim EX-S770 is the latest model in Casio's Exilim Card line of ultra-compact/ultra-slim cameras. It features 7.2 megapixel capture resolution, a wide-screen 2.8 inch "Super Bright" LCD and 3x optical zoom. It's available in three colors (blue, red, and silver) and is only 0.7 inches thick. If you're looking for a slim camera with a nice LCD and good battery life, the S770 should be considered.

Image quality was good overall. Details were sharp with just the tiniest amount of softness in the corners that isn't noticeable unless you're looking hard for it. Colors were good, but, in my opinion, a bit on the "vivid" side. Chromatic aberration (purple fringing) was very well controlled. The camera usually did a good job with exposure with possibly a slight tendency to over-exposure in tough lighting conditions. ...

Review: "If you're thinking of buying a new camera, the chances are that you're considering one of the big brands you've often heard of, such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus or Fujifilm. Maybe you'll consider a Sony, a Panasonic or a Samsung, since you've heard they're pretty good. However the chances are you'll overlook the longest-established consumer digital camera brands of them all: Casio.

Apart from its ultra-skinny profile and stylish appearance, the first thing that strikes you about the S770 is its blistering performance. It starts up in just over a second, which is admirably quick, but the stand-out feature is the autofocus. It has the fastest AF system I've ever seen in a compact camera, focusing in well under half a second even in very low light. It has a good AF illuminator that enables it to focus in total darkness at a range of at least four meters.

Apart from the wide-angle distortion and the CD manual I have nothing but praise for the S770. In my opinion it is currently the best ultra-compact digital camera on the market. Considering build quality, design, performance, value for money and photographic results it is comfortably ahead of the competition in every respect."

Review (Summary): "No one else makes ultraslim cameras like Casio, and its latest model in the svelte EXILIM line - the 7.2 megapixel EX-S770 - raises the style bar once again. As I remarked in a review of the Casio EXILIM EX-S600 last year, EXILIM cameras look a lot like the popular RAZR cell phones from Motorola, and the new Casio EX-S770's resemblance is even more pronounced. And like the latest RAZRs, the Casio S770 comes in different colors including silver, red, and purple.

Image quality, however, was spotty. In normal daylight conditions, the Casio S770 captured good, if slightly underexposed images that look good enlarged to 11 x 14 inches from arm's length. When you look closely at those prints, however, you notice how aggressive the anti-noise processing is, obliterating fine detail. I also found the Casio S770 had below average low-light capability for shooting without a flash, with user-selectable ISO peaking at just 400. ..."

"The new Casio Exilim EX-S770 continues the tradition of Exilim cameras, packing a 3X zoom into a body that is something less than 2 cm (3/4 inch) thick when the camera is Off.

Besides being thin, the Casio EX-S770 is also quite elegant and available in a wide range of colors. In the case of this version, most of the camera is covered in a deep blue-black metal while the top and sides are finished in a mid-grey plastic with a metallic finish.

The Casio Exilim EX-S770 is a good camera that offers good image quality. It's body design, however, is so thin that it can be a touch impractical. Too often, while holding the camera, the left-hand index finger touches the DATA button, turning off the capture mode, loosing the opportunity for the shot. So while it may be appealing because of the ease with which it can be carried, users should make time to get used to handling it before trying to capture important photos."

Review: "The S770 is the camera equivalent of a catwalk model, thinner than perhaps you might think normal, but stunning looking nevertheless particularly in the right outfit. And the S770 comes with three liveries: red, silver (tested here) and blue, so you’ve got a choice of looks to match your mood or even your outfit.

Stylish, very very compact, well built and packed with great features, the lack of more manual control might make some look elsewhere and the problems with noise and detail have dropped it a couple of points."
