Review: "Although it's the new flagship digital camera in Nikon's L-series, the Nikon Coolpix L5 borrows the look, feel, and some of the features of Nikon's advanced P-series....The Coolpix L5 includes a 7.2-megapxiel CCD sensor and a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom (38-190mm in 35mm format) and the company's lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) technology, making for one heck of a sophisticated camera for entry-level users.
If you're an entry-level photographer happy to let your digital camera do all the work, the Nikon Coolpix L5 may be right for you. Packed with advanced features taken from Nikon's higher-end P-series, the Nikon Coolpix L5 is a very sophisticated model at a very attractive sub-$300 price. (We've even seen it for as low as $200 at some online retailers.) In addition to a long Nikkor-branded 5x optical (38-190mm lens on a 35mm camera) zoom lens, the Nikon Coolpix L5 features Nikon's lens-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) optical image stabilization technology which helps steady long-range shots."

| Review: "The Nikon Coolpix L5 is a new compact digital camera aimed squarely at the point and shoot user, but which still has a number of advanced features, including a 5x zoom lens equivalent to 38-190mm and a Vibration Reduction mode for shake-free pictures. Other highlights of the Nikon L5 include a 7.2 megapixel sensor and 2.5 inch LCD screen, whilst In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, Face-Priority AF and D-Lighting aim to intelligently improve your photographs.
With Vibration Reduction set to 'normal', delivered images are reassuringly sharp, given that this is still an entry level model, while colours - left to full auto default - are realistically and naturally rendered...." |

| Review: "The classic design of the Nikon Coolpix L5 hides a stabilized 5X optical zoom, the vibration reduction system being discreetly indicated by the letters VR on the front of the camera. Moreover, this camera also offers a 7.2 megapixel resolution and a 2.5-inch LCD monitor.
The Coolpix L5 is a camera that demands little from the photographer, and yet delivers a good image quality at the highest resolution and least compression. Most notably, exposures are usually flawless and the color rendition is excellent, making it possible to print pictures out to the 10 x 7.5 inch size (25 x 18.75 cm) at 300 dpi..." |

| Review: "If it's true that "good things come in small packages", the Nikon Coolpix L5 has the small part down pat. Open the L5 box and you'll find a camera that's about the size of a pack of cigarettes, which makes for easy carrying options.
The L5, as with most cameras in this class, takes some time to acquire and focus on the subject, and more time to capture the image once the shutter is depressed. This makes shooting moving subjects a challenge, although it certainly can be done. Shutter speeds may vary from 4 to 1/2000th second. In daylight conditions I would estimate it took about a second or so to acquire focus and capture the image. As I mentioned earlier, in dim conditions focus acquisition was spotty, and those times could increase dramatically." |

The Coolpix L5 ($299) is the top-end camera in Nikon's entry-level camera lineup. There's a Coolpix L6 out there, but it's not nearly as impressive as the L5, and here's why. For one, it has a big 5X lens in a body that normally would have a 3X lens. Second, it has optical image stabilization - lens based - so you can get sharp photos in situations with less-than-desirable light. Other features include a 7.2 Megapixel CCD, 2.5" LCD display, numerous scene modes, and a VGA movie mode.
While it has its share of nice features, ultimately I was disappointed with the Nikon Coolpix L5. I like its build quality, 5X zoom lens, image stabilization, and powerful flash, but its sluggish performance, low resolution LCD, lack of manual settings, and so-so photo quality make it a camera that I'd recommend passing over..." |
