Fujifilm FinePix S9100 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Review: "I purchased the FinePix S9100 because I wanted a good camera that would tide me over until I purchase a great DSLR outfit (I'm eying the EOS 5D). I had no DSLR expectations from the S9100. I just wanted a decent digital camera with a good grip.

Even though I prefer to test out cameras for a month so I can get a really good feel for their usability, given the S9100's shortcomings, there was nothing else to do but to wrap it back up and sit it nicely in its box. It's going back. I was so disappointed. I loved the body, loved the grip, loved the zoom and ease of use, but when it came to its most important feature, the sensor, I just couldn't live with it."

Review (Summary): "Fujifilm's FinePix S9100 couples a powerful 10.7x optical zoom lens which can focus down to just 0.4 inches, with a 1/1.6 inch nine-megapixel Super CCD HR imager that yields a maximum ISO rating of 1,600. Like its predecessor, the S9000, the Fujifilm S9100 has the same overall body design, dual media slots (CompactFlash / Microdrive, and xD-Picture Card), and an electronic viewfinder that can offer frame rates of either 30 or 60 frames per second.

I had a lot of fun shooting with the S9100. All it lacks is optical image stabilization. That may seem like a big omission these days, but the S9100 does surprisingly well without it, capturing usable images with a handheld shutter speed as low as 1/5 second. The lack of optical image stabilization does make the S9100 a very affordable long zoom, and it won't disappoint anyone who wants to learn how to take great pictures. All the controls are there, most of them just a button away."

Review: "With 10.7x optical zoom and 9MP resolution, the Fujifilm S9100 provides very good image quality (though not approaching the exceptional low noise capability of the FinePix F30). Noise is low at ISO 80, 100, 200 and 400. ISO 800 is usable, and a high ISO 1600 allows you to get the shot where otherwise you may not be able to depending on the amount of light present.

One of the prized feature of the FinePix S9100 is, of course, the manual Zoom Ring. Yes, zooming is one of those things that is much better done manually using a zoom ring than electrically using a zoom lever. It is smooth and allows fast adjustment across the entire zoom range. You can stop precisely at any point you want and do it as fast or as slow as you want..."

Review: "Back in November 2005 I reviewed the Fujifilm FinePix S9500 (9000 in the U.S.), and to say I liked it is something of an understatement. I seriously considered selling my digital SLR - at the time a 6-megapixel and very dust-prone Pentax *ist D, and buying the S9500 instead. I didn't, as it turned out, because I ended up getting a Sony A100, but it really was that good, as many satisfied customers will attest.

Because of that success, in August last year Fuji announced the replacement for the S9500, and surprised nobody by naming it the S9600 (9100 in the U.S.). It has also proved to be extremely popular, particularly with reviewers, which is why it's taken me until now to get my hands on one.

The S9600 offers only a few minor improvements to what was already an outstanding enthusiast's camera. If you've already got an S9500 it's probably not worth upgrading, but if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to a digital SLR, or a second camera for when you don't want to cart your whole kit around, the S9600 is the best choice on the market."

Review (Summary): "The Fujifilm FinePix S9600 camera looks like a compact SLR camera rather than like an ordinary compact camera. This is surely because of the lens with the zoom ring. The first impression is good; the FinePix S9600 has a good hand position and feels firmer than the FinePix S6500fd, because of the material that has been used.

The Fujifilm S9600 guarantees a fine image quality, outstanding flash photography and has been equipped with an all round zoom range. Although the necessary options are present, the demanding photographer will possibly experience an obstacle when we look at what RAW demands when it comes to the speed and processing in the camera. Moreover, this photographer will have more problems with the seemingly small flaws like the restricted compression choice than the average consumer. ..."

Review: "You might wonder why you would want a bridge digital camera. Well there's the 28 - 300m lens for a start. Great for landscapes, portraits and macros. No changing lenses and no worries about your sensor getting dust on it. I already have the S9500 and it's a great all round camera but I found for sports photography it was quite slow at focusing and I missed quite a few shots so I was interested to see if the S9600 would live up to its promises.

Overall it's a nice camera worth buying if you don't want to go up to an SLR just yet. It's feels nice in your hand and is well balanced. The buttons are placed logically and are easy to use. It takes SD or Compact Flash and you can have both in the camera at the same time so you could carry all the storage you need in camera..."

DigiCam Review 7.00 01-03-07 Read Full Review
Review: "Announced on the 24th August, 2006 the Fujifilm FinePix S9600 / S9100 is an SLR shaped 9 megapixel digital camera with a 10.7x optical zoom lens and a 2.0" (230,000 pixel) tilting LCD screen for easy high and low angle shooting. The camera has the ability to take photos at ISO 1600, while most ordinary digital cameras stop at ISO 400. The 10.7x manually set optical zoom lens is equivalent to 28-300mm on a 35mm camera.

The Fujifim S9600 / S9100 is an impressive 9 megapixel digital camera with a wide angle 10.7x optical zoom lens and a large 2" display. The camera is one of very few to include ISO 1600. It has excellent responsiveness and is designed to be able to take great photos in situation the majority of cameras would fail...."

Review: "At the top of Fujifilm's line of consumer cameras sits the FinePix S9100, a 9-megapixel superzoom with a 10.7X optical, 28mm-to-300mm (35mm equivalent) f/2.8-to-f/4.9 zoom lens, and more features than you can shake an ultracompact at. But even with all those features, it is missing a very important one: image stabilization. Fuji talks big about its Picture Stabilization shooting mode, useful since it keeps your shutter speed fast and prevents blur. But it's no substitute for optical or mechanical image stabilization, which can be found in numerous other superzooms...."

Megapixel.net ----- 01-25-07 Read Full Review
Review: "This revision of the Fujifilm S9000 is called the FinePix S9100, and the FinePix S9600 in Europe. Differences between the S9100/9600 and the S9000/9500 are few, particularly externally, where these changes can be summarized as a larger LCD monitor, up from 1.8-inch to 2 inches.

In our opinion, presenting the FinePix S9100/S9600 as a serious revision of the S9000/S9500 is a bit of a stretch. And, while the S9000/S9500 was indeed a ground breaking camera when it was introduced in mid 2005, this is now 2007 and a lot of developments have taken place since. So, although based on an SLR design that makes it comfortable to use, the S9100/S9600 does not have either the flexibility, nor the image quality that dSLR cameras offer; and with a street price that is close to some entry-level dSLR cameras, the S9100/S9600 may be faced with some tough competition."
