Canon Powershot SD900 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.63 (out of 10)
Review: "If it’s true that you can’t tell a book by its cover, then the diminutive Canon Powershot SD900 just seems too small and compact to be packing a 10 megapixel wallop. But large file size is only part of the story for a little camera that produces excellent images and color right out of the box.

The 3x Canon optical zoom on the SD900 offers an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/4.9. Performance seemed good at the telephoto end of the range, but there was barrel distortion (straight lines bow out from the center) present at the wide angle end. There was also fringing (purple ghost images) present in the high-contrast boundary areas on images. The barrel distortion could be noticed in normal photos, but the fringing was most apparent under great magnification (400%). ..."

Review: "Sitting at the top of the company's Digital IXUS range, Canon's Digital IXUS 900 Ti (PowerShot SD 900 Digital ELPH in the US) is a stunning piece of engineering. Finished in precision-crafted titanium with the attractive Perpetual Curve (i.e. rounded) design of its predecessors, the slender Digital IXUS 900 Ti (Best Current Price: £245) offers a class-leading resolution of 10-Megapixel resolution, ultra-compact 3x optical zoom lens and Canon's latest DIGIC III image processor with Noise Reduction technology.

The camera's 10-Megapixel CCD sensor offers the highest resolution in the Digital IXUS range to date, providing enough detail for high quality poster size prints with room for creative cropping..."

Review: "The Canon SD900 Digital ELPH features a compact, stylish case with rounded horizontal edges, and a retracting lens to make it pocket-friendly. The Canon SD900 includes a 10 megapixel imager, and a Canon-branded 3x optical zoom lens covers a fairly standard range of 37-111mm equivalent, a moderate wide-angle to moderate telephoto.

The SD900 is an excellent performer no matter what aspect you consider, with superior focusing and low light performance matched with a powerful flash that doesn't make you wait all day to recharge. And with a day-long battery, you couldn't ask for a better traveling companion."

Review: "Historically, Canon's PowerShot line has included some really great-performing, high-quality compact digital cameras. From the A-series PowerShot A630 to last year's PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph - both Editors' Choice winners - the company has produced a series of excellent products. This is why I am a little disappointed with the highest-megapixel member of the PowerShot family, the PowerShot SD900 Digital Elph.

The test shots revealed the same excellent quality I've seen in past PowerShots, with the added benefit of having higher ISO settings, which can help out in low-light situations. Interestingly, the highest ISO setting (3200) is found hidden inside a High ISO mode. ..."

Review: "The Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti is currently the flagship model of the Digital IXUS range (also called the Canon Powershot SD900 in the USA). Finished in precision-crafted titanium and retaining the Perpetual Curve design of its predecessors, the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti offers 10 megapixels, ultra-compact 3x optical zoom lens, Canon's new DIGIC III image processor with advanced Noise Reduction technology, and Face Detection AF/AE...

There's so little to criticize on Canon compact cameras these days it's almost getting boring, and the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti is no different. It looks good, responds well, is for the most part easy and intuitive to use, and, thanks to that standardized (across the IXUS range) 9-point AiAF, delivers sharply detailed images that will more than satisfy its target market..."

Review (Summary): "... It’s a high-spec pocket compact camera, featuring a 3x zoom lens, 10.0-megapixel 1/1.8" CCD sensor, 1600 ISO maximum sensitivity and a 2.5-in 230k LCD monitor. If that wasn’t enough it also has a titanium body. Titanium, as I’m sure you’re aware, is a metal which is stronger and lighter than steel, and is able to withstand the temperatures and stresses of sustained speeds over Mach 3, which is sure to come in handy. ...

The Canon IXUS 900 Ti may have a tough and attractive exterior, but inside it has a fairly straightforward specification, with little in the way of unique features. Its impressive build quality, class-leading performance and excellent picture quality are undeniable, but there are other models in the Canon IXUS range that offer these same qualities plus more, but for less money."

Review: "The 10-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD900 manages to be stylish without being inconvenient or awkward. Its sturdy metal body, an attractive matte-gray with black accents, is smooth and slightly curvy, and at 6.7 ounces and 1.1 inches thick, it's just the right size to fit into a jacket pocket.

A solid, handy, compact camera, the Canon PowerShot SD900 nevertheless lacks some useful features offered by the similarly priced SD800 IS. Unless you absolutely need the extra pixels-for, say, cropping tightly on a portion of a photo or printing to larger than 8x10-you're probably better off with the faster, stabilized SD800 IS."

Review: "Announced just before Photokina in September 2006, the SD900 sits at the top of Canon's successful ELPH / IXUS range and offers the highest resolution yet; 10 megapixels (on a 1/1.8" CCD). It also features Canon's new DIGIC III processor and another first; a solid titanium body, which as well as adding a touch of class makes for a lighter, more durable camera...

..If you like a touch of luxury (which the build and finish definitely give you) and want a 'point and shoot' camera that offers reliably high quality output suitable for decent enlargements, the SD900 is certainly a worthy competitor. We just feel that ..."
