Olympus Stylus 410 Digital Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.50 (out of 10)
It's no surprise as to why the Olympus Stylus 410 is such a popular camera with the point-and-shooters of the world. It offers a variety of features, a sleek and portable design, all at an affordable street price of US$379. Its sliding lens cover gives added protection so you can throw it in your bag and carry it with you anywhere. With a straight forward design and easy-to-use navigation system the Olympus Stylus 410 won’t confuse the average user, but won't disappoint them either.

The Olympus Stylus 410 is the latest in the compact Stylus line of digital cameras from that company. Featuring a 4.0-megapixel CCD, 3x lens, "all-weather" body design, and compact size, the Olympus Stylus 410 Digital really isn't that much different from its predecessor, last year's Stylus 400 model. The fully automatic system requires very little user intervention with only a handful of creative options, but has the benefits of five preset Scene modes and a QuickTime Movie mode (without sound). The all-weather body can withstand water spray from any direction, but isn't meant to be fully submerged in water. Still, rubber seals and a separate plastic chassis inside the metal body provide excellent protection against water splashes and rain.

The µ[mju:] 410 Digital is as easy-to-use, good looking and delivers similar image quality as its predecessor the µ[mju:] 400 Digital. It gets 1/2 star more because of the improvements that Olympus have made, but it doesn't quite earn the maximum rating simply because it still doesn't offer enough photographic control.

The Olympus Stylus 410 shares its 4-megapixel resolution, 3X optical zoom lens, menu interface, and a brace of other features with its stablemate, the Olympus D-580 Zoom. But for the extra $100 you'll pay for the Stylus, you get a more compact, attractive camera in a water-resistant case; 3 extra shooting modes (for a total of 10); a long-lasting, rechargeable lithium-ion battery; some minor performance improvements; and a cool remote-control device.

If you're looking to do some shooting at the House of Sand and Fog, Olympus has the camera for you. Not only does it capture sharp, well-saturated images, this compact 4-megapixel addition to the Olympus Stylus line has also been weather-proofed. Rubber gaskets protect the Olympus Stylus 410's interior and sensitive parts, including an "all-weather" microphone and speaker.
