Fuji Film FinePix F440 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 2.67 (out of 10)
The Fuji FinePix F440 ($399) is a compact 4.1 Megapixel camera that packs just a bit more zoom than other cameras in its class: 3.4X. The F440 has a traditional CCD sensor, rather than the SuperCCD that Fuji has been putting in their cameras over the last few years. The 3.4X zoom lens isn't the only larger-than-average item on the camera: there's also the 2.0" LCD display.

Fujifilm's gone retro--not in appearance, but in feature set, with this ultracompact that lacks many of the amenities you've come to expect from a 4-megapixel camera in this class. There's no burst feature, only four scene options, no autoassist lamp, and no control over metering or focus modes. The Fujifilm FinePix F440's "manual" mode is actually just a setting that allows access to user-specified exposure compensation and white-balance options. Mediocre picture quality and even the movie mode--60-second clips at 320x240 pixels and 10fps--will invoke more nostalgia than enthusiasm.

In the FinePix F440, Fuji has produced a point-and-shoot camera that is stylish and incredibly compact, while including a wide variety of image quality settings and options. The F440 has 1/2.5” 4.1MP Super CCD, 2.0 inch LCD screen, and a real image optical viewfinder. It is possible to record movies in two formats, with audio recorded through a monaural microphone. Playback is available with several options for both still and video recordings. This expansive camera is small and sleek with a sensible layout, while remaining relatively inexpensive. Currently available for $249.95 (USD) online, the F440 is a strong competitor within the introductory digital camera market.

The 4.1-megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F440 is a decent camera wrapped in a small, square package. And - let's face it - it's cute, which can be an important factor for many buyers of ultracompact cameras. When you turn the camera on, it emits a series of beeps - that sounds like R2-D2. Cool little blue lights come on, the powerful lens pops out, and you're ready to shoot - after 3.5 seconds, the longest shutter lag in this roundup. (On the other hand, recycle time between flash shots was the lowest: 2.7 seconds).

I've been a bad man. Fujifilm lent me a couple of cameras well over a month ago for review and I'm just now getting around to writing up my impressions of them. Normally I dawdle on these sort of things because I don't want to write them, usually because the product is so poor or boring that I just can't get excited enough to say anything meaningful.

The Fujifilm FinePix F440 is a very well-designed, extremely compact digital camera that is small enough to carry around at all times, stylish enough to impress your friends, yet doesn't forget to produce excellent images too. The Fujifilm FinePix F440 has the look and feel of a premium product, with its brushed aluminum exterior and excellent general construction. The large 2 inch LCD on the rear of the camera is impressive given the camera's overall size and it produces impressive 4 megapixel images that aren't too noisy at ISOs 80-200 and don't suffer from chromatic aberrations.
