Canon ImagePROGRAF iPF5000 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review: "The new Canon iPF5000 is a 17" inkjet printer which features a new 12-color pigment ink system, ensuring a wider color gamut with improved gradation and color consistency. Canon has a long history in the inkjet market, particularly in the desktop sizes where their BubbleJet printers have been a popular choice for nearly 20 years......Canon obviously took this to heart and developed a range of large format printers that would appeal to photographers.

The Canon iPF5000 is an excellent option for anyone looking for large format printing. The print quality is excellent, and the speed is the best in its class. Although it's not the easiest printer to use, and the documentation leaves much to be desired, once you're familiar with the operation and options, this isn't an issue, especially if you use roll or cassette media. Quality wise, when using the 16bit plug-in, the tonal gradations are the best I've seen in any pigment inkjet printer...."

Review: "In May, 2006 Canon began shipping the iPF5000 printer. This is a 12 ink, pigment-based, 17" carriage photographic printer capable of printing in 16 bit mode. It is physically large, moderately priced (for what it does), and, as will be seen, surpasses just about every other fine-art inkjet printer yet available, in terms of both image quality and convenience of features.

Canon, being the 800 pound gorilla of the photographic industry, seems to have now made a corporate commitment not to allow Epson's virtual monopoly on professional wide carriage photographic printers to go unchallenged. With the iPF5000 they have taken aim squarely at the Epson 4800, accurately targeting all of that printer's flaws, and in some ways surpassing its well recognized first-rate image quality.

f you do not currently own a printer of this type, then I would regard the decision to purchase as a fairly straightforward one. The Canon iPF 5000 offers a combination of image quality and productivity advantages that are quite compelling. If you own a previous generation printer of this general size and capability then only you can answer the question of budget and need, based on your own circumstances."

User Report Summary: "This report will document my experiences setting up and using the printer over the last 4 months. All of the significant problems that have been uncovered and documented on the Unofficial Canon iPF5000 Printer Wiki will also be included. I believe that this will give the reader a better feel for what it is like to own and use the iPF5000 and avoid any unpleasant surprises after making a purchase. Since the good qualities are already known and well-described, my focus will be on the aspects of the printer which are less than stellar.

Despite the not insignificant negative aspects of owning this printer, it should not be forgotten that when it works correctly, the iPF5000 is an excellent printer, capable of outputting fabulous images. In the USA the price is extremely competitive with Epson's offerings, though far less so in Europe. "
