Review: "The Epson P-5000 Multimedia Storage Viewer is a portable storage device that allows you to download digital photos and movies onto its 80Gb hard-drive and then view them on its 4 inch, 640x480 resolution, 4-color filter system LCD screen. The Epson P5000 has built-in card slots for Compact Flash and SD / SDHC memory cards and it also supports the majority of other memory card formats via optional adapters. The Epson P5000 will be of particular interest to digital SLR camera users as it can show a preview of many RAW file formats as well as JPEG images, and it supports both the sRGB and Adobe RGB color spaces.
The Epson P-5000 is both a forward leap in terms of functionality and speed, and perhaps a backwards step for some photographers in terms of the overall design. The P-5000 is much quicker than the older P-4000 model. The transfer speed from memory card to the P-5000 is twice as quick, helping to ensure that you can achieve over 25 x 1Gb transfers before the battery runs out.....Epson have shifted the design concept of the P-5000 - it's more functional for the working photographer, rather than stylish as with the older designs..."

| Review: "As a long time user of the Epson P-2000, I was looking forward to playing with the newest generation of the company's portable storage solutions. While I took a look at the P-3000 at a trade show, I never did get my hands on it for testing. So I was really interested in working with the P-5000. I mention the P-3000 because that was a radical departure from the P-2000. It had different styling and a different user interface. Many of the specs and capabilities of the P-3000 have been incorporated into the P-5000.
One of the things that limited the functionality of the P-2000 was that it had difficulty displaying higher resolution images and handling RAW images. The P-5000 corrects those limitations. It can display images up to 30 megapixels and it works with a wide range of RAW file formats. According to the specs, it will display RAW files generated with higher-end Epson, Nikon, Canon, Konica-Minolta, Pentax and Olympus digital cameras. I tested the unit with 16-megapixel Canon RAW files. The unit was able to display the RAW files as mini thumbnails, larger thumbnails and full-sized images."

| Review: "I should imagine that there aren't many digital photographers around that haven't run out of space now and then; the dreaded ‘card full’ symbol is enough to make anyone mutter a few expletives under the breath. Fortunately, Epson have come to the rescue with a handy little storage viewer that will fit into virtually any camera bag pocket. Now you don’t need to panic when you're down to your last few megabytes of space!
There’s no doubt the P-5000 is a handy, versatile viewer that performs well enough. Its hardware is up to date and capable, utilizing fast USB 2.0 technology and supports the most popular card formats. The heart of the machine, the screen, is lovely, sixteen million colors in high definition really looks the part....To my mind what really lets the unit down is the software, both the operating system and the PC/Mac software could be so much better. If as much effort had gone into the OS as the hardware it would be a very different animal." |
