Olympus SP-550 Ultra Zoom Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.33 (out of 10)
Review (Summary): "The Olympus SP-550UZ’s 18x optical zoom surpasses all other compact digital cameras currently on the market. The new flagship of Olympus’ ultra-zoom line has 7.1 megapixels and image stabilization. It will compete with the likes of Canon’s image stabilized S-series and Sony’s H-series, which just added two new models that have 15x zoom. ...

The 18x lens makes the SP-550 a tempting choice for sports shooters, but the slow auto focus system and 1.2 fps full-resolution burst mode will most likely botch action shots. The number of movie modes, available controls, and long lens may tempt consumers who want a hybrid camera, but the inability to use the audio and the optical zoom at the same time should deter them. ..."

Review: "Olympus was one of the first companies to devise bridge cameras with long zooms, such as the C-series cameras, and now the SP series. The new SP-550 UZ is probably the most ambitious bridge-type camera on the market currently, offering an 18X optical zoom and equipped with an image stabilization system.

We can only hope that with its excellent image quality and convincing optical performance, the SP-550 UZ is also a herald of a new class of bridge cameras that will place a strong emphasis on image quality and overall capabilities, and which will, in turn, offer many people with an alternative to bulkier digital SLR cameras."

Review: "The Olympus SP-550UZ is a 7.1 Megapixel super-zoom compact with a difference: where most super-zoom ranges top-out at 12x, or 15x if you’re really lucky, the SP-550UZ boasts nothing less than a whopping 18x optical zoom lens - that's the world's biggest at the time of writing. Better still, while most super-zooms are limited to modest wide angle capabilities, the SP-550UZ features decent coverage equivalent to 28mm.

..the SP-550UZ remains a very impressive camera which can delight in many respects. The build quality's great, the stabilization effective and the zoom range extremely seductive. So long as you're willing to accept the caveats above - and the lack of a flip-out screen - the SP-550UZ comes recommended."

Review: "the Olympus SP-550 Ultra Zoom is a new 7 megapixel digital camera with an amazing wide-angle 18x optical zoom ED lens complete with 1cm macro mode. The cameras 18x optical zoom lens is equiv. 28 - 504mm on a 35mm camera and is the world's largest zoom available on a compact digital camera, and thankfully the camera has a built in anti-shake CCD sensor.

...The Olympus SP-550 UZ manages to put Olympus back up there with the other ultra zoom cameras, but goes one step further with the world's biggest 18x optical zoom lens! If you want a wide-angle ultra zoom digital camera, then the Olympus SP-550UZ is Recommended, it has numerous benefits and a few little problems, but the benefits definitely outweigh the negatives."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus SP-550 UZ features what is currently the biggest zoom lens on a compact digital camera - no less than an 18x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 28-504mm! This focal range covers every possible photographic situation, from wide-angle landscapes to candid close-ups. To counteract the inevitable effects of camera-shake, Olympus have wisely included a Dual Image Stabilization system, plus there's an extensive ISO range of 50-5000. Other standout features include a 7.1 megapixel sensor, 2.5 inch LCD screen, macro mode of 1cm and fully creative exposure modes (P/A/S/M).

To start on a positive note, although a lot of noise is introduced in low light, its anti shake mechanism works pretty well in avoiding image blur at the extreme telephoto end of the zoom – indeed much better than expected given my initial impression that Olympus was perhaps over-reaching itself here. ..."

Review (Summary): "With an 18X optical zoom boasting a 4.7mm-to-84.2mm range (equivalent to a 35mm lens with a 28mm–504mm zoom) and corresponding maximum f-stops of f/2.8 to f/4.5, the SP-550 UZ is optically well equipped. The telephoto lens brings you closer to the action than you can get with most compact cameras, and at the same time, the wide-angle lens lets you get more in a frame. ...

Overall, I found that the SP-550 UZ's images displayed a very nice dynamic range and good contrast - just strong enough without having the shadows swallow up the details. Flash coverage was even and powerful enough to provide proper illumination without blowing out highlights. And you can make the strobe stronger or weaker, which is a nice touch. ..."

Head-to-Head Review: "The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 is smaller than expected. Compared to its competitor SP-550, our silver version of the FZ8 is lighter, less solid and less appealing. Its ergonomics are not as good as the Olympus.

Olympus has a long history of ultra-zoom compact cameras and the SP-550 sets a new standard with its 18x optical zoom (28 to 504 mm). A big zoom lens extends from a very solid body. It is made of polycarbonate, but because of its surface structure, matte gray back and matte rubber front, it looks very durable.

Although the two cameras have almost similar specifications, they do differ. The SP-550 is better built with very good ergonomics and many features. The FZ8, though, is faster and has a slight advantage in image quality with less distortion, color noise, chromatic aberration and workable RAW..."

Review: "...On paper, it may have the most impressive specs of any ultra zoom out there. It packs a whopping 18X optical zoom lens (that starts at 28mm no less) into a relatively small body and throws in -- get ready -- image stabilization as well. Instead of using lens-shift image stabilization like most ultra zooms, Olympus used CCD-shift technology to reduce blurry photos. We'll see how well the system works later in the review.

Photo quality was very good for the most part. The SP-550 takes well-exposed photos, with accurate colors, pleasing sharpness, and relatively little purple fringing. The one exception in the color accuracy department comes when you're using custom white balance -- as my test photos hopefully illustrated. Noise levels on the camera are low at ISO 50 and 100, and reasonable at ISO 200 and 400. I would save ISO 800 for desperation only. The photo quality at ISO 1600, 3200, and 5000 isn't what I'd consider acceptable. ..."

Review (Summary): "Olympus's most ambitious Ultra Zoom yet, the 7.1 megapixel Olympus SP-550 UZ features a whopping 18x (28 to 504mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, ranging from true wide-angle to long telephoto. The relatively fast f/2.8 - 4.5 lens employs high-refractive, aspherical, and extra-low dispersion elements to maximize sharpness and clarity, and is also capable of focusing as close as 0.39 inches (1cm), an amazing feat considering the record-breaking zoom range. ...

While I had a little trouble focusing on subjects that wouldn't sit still, the Olympus SP-550 UZ let me shoot things I couldn't even see without looking through its lens. And I found that a lot of fun. A whole new world of birds, fish and buffalo, in fact. But the Olympus SP-550 UZ was just as capable taking shots at wide angle and in Macro mode. ..."

Review: "The Olympus SP-550UZ packs an 18x optical zoom, RAW capture and a helpful guide mode into a solidly built EVF camera, but some of the "features" come with asterisks and footnotes.

Overall, the Olympus SP-550UZ is a very capable camera, especially at lower ISOs with the sensor-shift image stabilization activated. The reach of this lens is record-breaking, and it covers that long distance while keeping distortion mostly contained, except at the extreme wide angle setting, which is typical for this camera class..."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus SP-550 UZ shakes up the ultra zoom category with an 18x optical zoom that starts at a beautiful 28mm wide-angle coverage to the longest telephoto available so far at 504mm. No longer playing catch up to its competitors, the SP-550 UZ now includes CCD-shift image stabilization to help eliminate camera shake when using long focal lengths.

My personal take is that the Olympus SP-550 UZ is a well designed and very good ultra zoom digital camera, is enjoyable to use, and the 18x wide-angle optical zoom blows past all its ultra zoom competitors. If you must have that much zoom power (and the wonderful wide-angle), no other ultra zoom can match it. Just don't expect to be able to track and follow fast moving action at that long focal length. ..."
