Epson Stylus Pro 3800 Review

Review: "Epson separates its photo printers into groups, such as the snapshot-dedicated PictureMate line, the amateur-through-enthusiast Stylus Photo line, and the prosumer-through-professional Stylus Pro line. However, the company's latest high-end printer, the Stylus Pro 3800 does a lot to blur the line between enthusiast- and prosumer-level printers.
Prints from the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 are among the best we've seen from any inkjet printer costing less than $1,500. In fact, in some ways, this printer even outclasses the pricier Stylus Pro 4800. Most notably, we saw very little banding in the smooth, difficult-to-render, out-of-focus areas of images, which often turn to virtual stairsteps on inkjet printers..."

| Review: "The Stylus Pro 3800 is based around Epson's Ultrachrome K3 ink set. These are that company's state-of-the-art pigment inks, offering a wide gamut and excellent light fastness (as do all pigment-based inks). These inks are found on other printers in the Epson line, ranging from 13" to 44"; the 2400, 4800, 7800, and 9800 models.
...it would appear that the Epson 3800 has carved out a unique place for itself. It is the least expensive 17" printer on the market, and also the smallest physically. Image quality is on a par with anything else currently available. It gives up the use of large ink cartridges, and the possibility of using roll paper, but that's the price one pays for smaller size and lower initial cost." |

| Review: "The Pro 3800 uses EPSON's well proven UltraChrome K3 inkset, these are the same inks as used by the R2400 and Pro 4800 (as well as Epson's larger format printers). The Pro 3800 uses eight 80ml ink cartridges containing; Photo Black, Light Black, Light Light Black, Matte Black, Magenta, Light Magenta, Cyan, Light Cyan and Yellow. Okay, so there are nine inks, but only eight inks are used at a time. Both black inks (Photo & Matte Black) are fitted, but depending on the media type you select from the menu, only one black is used. Incidentally K3 stand for 3 Blacks, the letter K is used to differentiate black from Blue (B).
I achieved remarkable results from the very first print, color and B/W prints are all faultless, I would be more than happy to exhibit or sell any print produced by this printer. EPSON has got the profiles spot on, which means you don't need to source third party profiles in order to produce great prints - the printer will deliver quality straight out of the box. I should point out that I used EPSON media throughout the review, I didn't test any third party media on the printer - this would require a custom profile and add too many variables to the review. |
