Olympus Stylus 1000 Review

Review Summary
Review: "The Olympus Mju 1000 is a weatherproof digital camera that is competitive in its size and appearance to all other digicams of this calibre. With dimensions of 97mm (w) x 56.2mm (h) x 22.7mm (d) and a weight of 140g (no battery) it is very pocketable and must go everywhere with you regardless of the weather conditions as it will withstand the rain, wind and snow.

With such great features, we did expect great things from the performance of the Olympus Mju 1000, unfortunately, we were slightly disappointed. The start-up to shoot time was an average 1.7secs and then 3.3secs between shots thereafter. Shutter lag was a pretty good 0.7secs, increasing to 1.3secs in dim conditions. The burst mode was pretty good too at a speedy 3.8fps...."

Review (Summary): "The Olympus Stylus 1000 features a 1/1.8 inches CCD imager with a resolution of 10 megapixels, the highest of any Stylus digital camera to date. This is coupled with an Olympus-branded 3x optical zoom lens with a pretty standard 35 to 105mm equivalent focal length range, and f/2.8 to f/4.7 maximum aperture, plus a 2.5 inch LCD display with a higher-than-average resolution of 230,000 pixels....

If you need a digicam with all-weather seals, this is a good choice, but we did find better printed results with the Olympus Stylus 720 SW, plus drop resistance and full waterproofing. The Stylus 1000 is a decent camera, but not quite a Dave's Pick."

Review: "Though light on the manual controls, the Stylus 1000 has some very nice features. Like all Stylii, its metal body has rubber gaskets and seals to keep water and gunk out. You can't shoot underwater, but you can splash it without fear or hesitation. For low-light and action shots, the Stylus includes digital image stabilization and can shoot at as much as ISO 6,400, but images greater than ISO 1,600 are cut down to five megapixels.

The Olympus Stylus 1000 offers high-resolution images and a water-resistant metal body. Unfortunately, noise issues and slow performance mean poor photos in low light. Unless splashability is a major factor in your purchase, you might want to look at other 10-megapixel cameras...

Review: "Another week and another 10-megapixel compact arrives and it's the Olympus Mju 1000, the 11th model in the Mju range. The 1000 is a very smart, stainless steel bodied compact that certainly looks very pretty. It is also weatherproofed; that all metal body means it is tough enough for most knocks.

The weatherproofing conforms to the IEC standard publication 529 IPX4, according to Olympus, this means it can withstand splashing from any angle; rain for example, but it is not fully submersible.

It is the sensor itself, which is just too small for the number of pixel it contains, cramming so many in means problems with noise, fringing and detail loss. Less is so much more (as evidenced by the recently reviewed Mju 725) in terms of detail and reduced noise problems..."

Review: "A new digital camera was deemed king of the Stylus line on August 23 with the announcement of the Olympus Stylus 1000. This 10-megapixel digital camera carries on the all-weather legacy of its series while stuffing in more resolution and a few more interesting features. This model has a "digital image stabilization mode," a Perfect Fix function in the playback mode, and Bright Capture technology meant for shooting in dim lighting.

As the new king of the Stylus hill, the Olympus Stylus 1000 will get lots of attention. The compact digital camera does have 10 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom lens, and a Bright Capture 2.5-inch LCD screen. The LCD has great resolution, the lens has a standard range, and the resolution sounds better than it really is. This model may have 10 megapixels, but it can really only be accessed in optimal lighting and without using many other features..."

Review: "The Olympus Stylus 1000 features 10 megapixel capture resolution, a 3x optical zoom, and a 2.5 inch LCD. As a member of the Stylus line, the camera is also "weatherproof". Rubber gaskets and O-rings provide water resistance and dust proofing.

Image quality on the Stylus 1000 was good, and in my opinion, slightly better than the Stylus 750. The images were sharper and didn't have the corner softness that I noticed with the Stylus 750's images. However, colors and exposure were generally good. I highly recommend that you examine the sample images from our review and other reviews to form your own opinion."
