Canon Powershot A640 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
Review: "The Canon PowerShot A640 is a 10MP digital camera with a 2.5" LCD, a 4x optical zoom lens (35-140 mm equivalent), with an additional 4x digital zoom for 16X overall. It uses 4 AA batteries and stores images as JPGs on SD/MMS/SDHC memory cards in several selectable compression and recording modes.

I am consistently impressed and amazed by how much function Canon squeezes into such small packages and how each successive generation builds upon the previous generation with even more function. The PowerShot A640 is no exception. While it can be used right out of the box, taking some time to familiarize oneself with the extensive feature set is time well spent."

Review: "The PowerShot A640, launched in August, just before Photokina 06, replaces the popular A620 at the top of Canon's increasingly well-specified 'budget' A series range. The new model gets a bit of a facelift (and a new coat of black paint) as well as a bigger screen, major pixel boost (up from 7MP to 10MP) and a few feature tweaks. Otherwise it offers pretty much everything the A620 did; 4x zoom lens, tilt and swivel LCD, full photographic control and optional converter lenses.

Compared to the other 10MP compact cameras on the market the A640 is an easy choice; there is little if any direct competition. What's interesting is that for many users the A640 is a serious alternative to Canon's own flagship G7 (which will set you back over $100 more). If you don't need the extra zoom (where the G7's image stabilization is useful) or flash hot shoe, you can get near-identical results from each camera, and there are areas where the A640 actually outperforms the G7..."

Review: "Sporting 10 Megapixels, the A640 becomes the highest resolution PowerShot A-Series model so far, although the A630 follows close behind with 8 Megapixels. Beyond resolution, the A640 is bundled with a larger 32MB memory card compared to the 16MB of the A630, although both will need to be replaced with something much bigger straightaway. The A640 additionally allows remote capture through software control on a PC or Mac, a feature which is not supported on the A630. Finally, the A640 has a black finish, while the A630 is in silver.

...What really separates the A640 from most compacts though is its degree of manual and creative control. It gives you full access to the aperture and shutter, along with quick and easy adjustments of all settings including a broad range of flash options. While physically larger and heavier than most compacts, it's comfortable to hold and sports a decent grip...

Review: "The Canon PowerShot A640 was introduced this fall as a 10-megapixel prospect for the holiday season. It replaces the 7.1-megapixel Canon A620 and is the first A-series camera to include a whopping 10 megapixels. The PowerShot A640 has a Digic II image processor, a 4x optical zoom lens, and 21 shooting modes with a range of manual and automatic modes.

What makes the A640 a solid camera is that it allows beginners to develop their photography skills by graduating from the scene modes to the manual mode without needing to buy different cameras. A few of the A640's highlights include a rotating 2.5-inch LCD screen that has a wide view, a built-in flash with adjustable power, easy to use control and mode dial interface, and in-camera editing for simple direct printing. ..."

Review: "The PowerShot A630 and A640 are two lower priced cameras that offer the manual controls and expandability usually reserved for more expensive cameras. Both cameras feature 4X zoom lens, a rotating 2.5" LCD display, a VGA movie mode, and unlimited continuous shooting.

If you've been visiting this site for a long time, then you already know that I like Canon's A-series cameras. The PowerShot A630 and A640 are just as good as their predecessors, offering high resolution CCDs, full manual controls, a large rotating LCD, expandability, and more. While they're not perfect and are pretty bulky, they are very easy to recommend to just about anyone."

Review: "The Canon PowerShot A640 couples a 10 megapixel CCD imager sensor with a 4x optical zoom lens that offers a 35mm-equivalent focal range of 35 to 140mm. That's a moderate wide-angle that reaches to a somewhat more generous telephoto than you'll find on most compact cameras.

...The A640 is arguably the first 10 megapixel digicam to meet the potential that the impressive size implies; and high ISO shots are also very good across the range of options. Bottom line, the Canon A640 is destined to become a classic. The Canon A640 is just an excellent all-around digital camera, an easy choice as a Dave's Pick, and we'll go further and give it our heartiest recommendation as a great all-around performer for almost anyone."

Review: "The Canon Powershot A640 is a 10 megapixel compact digital camera with a 2.5 inch vari-angle LCD screen and optical viewfinder. The 4x optical zoom lens offers an effective focal length of 35-140mm, whilst under the surface the Canon A640 uses the same advanced DIGIC II processor as the company's digital SLR cameras for faster performance and image processing....

...The Canon PowerShot A640 is, then, a reliable all-rounder that, with that 10 megapixel resolution, sets itself up as a possible back up compact for DSLR users (if they can make do with JPEG-only capture). Shame also about the lack of a built-in image stabilization of any sort; something that would have made the A640 even more compelling for the more demanding user."

Review (Summary): "From the PowerShot A620 springs the Canon PowerShot A640 and A630, both of which retain the same body design and 4X optical zoom as the A620, but with the addition of a 2.5-inch LCD monitor and an increase in resolution: the A630 to 8 megapixels, and the A640, the focus of this review, to 10 megapixels.

With a 10-megapixel CCD, the A640 offers a high resolution image that is able to capture a superb level of detail and which guarantees great prints. And this, combined with a broad set of modes that allow a photographer to grow, make it one of the best compacts on the market today."

Review: "The Canon PowerShot A640 has a 4x optical zoom lens which realizes a focal distance of 35-140 mm (equivalent to a 35 mm). Despite the comparatively large zoom range, the Canon PowerShot A640 has been kept reasonably compact. The lens has 8 elements in 7 groups, including two aspherical elements to maximize sharpness over the entire picture. The camera doesn't have an optical image stabilizer and has to rely on high ISO settings to achieve a short shutter speed in order to avoid movement blur. ...

think that Canon's success with its digital camera range is set to continue thanks to the excellent quality of the Canon PowerShot A640. I really liked this camera when I tried it out. The handy format with good grip, and more importantly, the settings options gave me lots of freedom to take a successful picture. ..."
