Olympus Stylus 740 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
Review: "With a pocket-friendly all-weather chassis, the Olympus Stylus 740 features an Olympus-branded 5x optical zoom with a useful 36-180mm equivalent focal length range, and an f/3.3 to 5.0 maximum aperture, a cut above the 3x zooms offered on most point-and-shoot cameras.

Like its stable mate Stylus 750, the Olympus Stylus 740 has stunningly good looks, but I was disappointed in its performance. Color just seemed unnatural and I came home with far too many blurry images for a camera that has image stabilization. I really wondered if the review unit was just malfunctioning. But it wasn't a mechanical issue. The thumbnails were very blurred, even when the image itself was not. Our laboratory test shots reveal terrible problems with focus across the frame, so it wasn't just me. The Olympus Stylus 740 shows some of the worst lens performance we've seen in a modern digicam..."

Review: "The Olympus Mju 740 is an all-weather digital camera which boasts a generous 7.1 mega pixels with a 5x optical zoom to get closer to those tiny objects with an impressive 23 scene modes to ensure perfect shots in any shooting situation. There is also an impressive Guide in the on-screen menu that will explain all menu options and help you with any problems you may have with a certain shot.

We really like many aspects of the Olympus Mju (stylus in the U.S.) 740 and on the whole it is a good digital camera for its price of around £200. With its weatherproof design, lovely large zoom and above average photo quality, it is also an attractive purchase for most photography needs."

Review: "The 7-megapixel Olympus Stylus 740 is a slightly scaled-down version of the Stylus 750. They both share the same weather-resistant metal body, the same 36mm-to-180mm (35mm equivalent), 5X optical zoom lens, the same 7-megapixel sensor, and the same image processor. The only real difference that separates the 740 from its brother is that it lacks the 750's optical image stabilization. It still has digital image stabilization, but the camera doesn't optically compensate for image shake as does the 750.

Both cameras performed nearly identically in our lab tests, save for one quirk: the Stylus 740 is slightly faster than the 750 in shot-to-shot time when the onboard flash is enabled. The 740 registered a 3.3-second flash recycle time, while the 750 took 4.5 seconds to accomplish that feat. Image quality between the two cameras was also similar; both produced very attractive photos with little distortion."
