Casio EXILIM EX-S600 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.50 (out of 10)
Review: "Though it measures just 0.8 inch at its thinnest point, the EX-S600 doesn't feel flimsy at all, with a sleek, slightly rounded design that has good balance and fits snugly in the palm of your hand. Along with the sleek design, the Casio EX-S600 has a very impressive set of features for a camera this thin, including a 3x optical zoom lens, nine-point Multi Autofocus with Contrast Detection, a new MPEG-4 movie mode with built-in camera shake reduction, a bright 2.2-inch LCD screen, incredible battery life of up to 300 pictures per charge, and 34 "Best Shot" scene modes including such unusual options as "Collection" which displays a detailed composition outline for shooting objects, and "Old Photo" which is designed to refresh faded colors of old album photos.

Image quality in ultraslim models has been notoriously hit or miss, pictures I captured with the Casio EX-S600 were somewhere in the middle for the category. Good up to 8x10, but soft beyond, sharpness at low ISO was about average with pleasing color. Dynamic range suffered, however, as did detail as the Casio EX-S600 struggled to overcome noise even at the lowest ISO setting...."

Review: "The Casio Exilim EX-S600, a versatile 6-megapixel ultracompact, puts the brains back into no-brainer snapshooting. With 35 scene modes that cover every picture-taking situation-including a few you probably never thought of-plus the ability to add 999 user-definable scenes of your own, this camera is reasonably prepared for just about anything you can throw at it. That includes low-light scenes tamed by antishake technology and automatic ISO sensitivity up to ISO 1,600, an instant picture mode for snapshots with virtually no shutter lag, and stellar motion-picture-capture capabilities. Unfortunately, those assets are outweighed by its limited 3X zoom range and mediocre photo quality. Still, it may be just the ticket for snapshooters looking for a friendly, stylish camera."

"The Casio Exilim EX-S600 is a card-sized ultra slim camera measuring 3.54 x 2.32 x 0.63 inches, with a 3x optical zoom lens. In the US, it will be available in three flashy colors – silver, orange, and blue. The 6 megapixel camera is a follow-up to Casio's recent 5 megapixel EX-S500. In addition to increased resolution, the EX-S600 offers Casio's ISO-boosting "Anti Shake DSP" in video mode, and offers much longer battery life than its predecessor. It's due to be available at the end of March 2006, with a suggested retail price of $399.99.

The EX-S600 isn't our style. It's very small and the design is bold, but the sad fact is that these are the most appealing things about the camera, and they won't help anyone take pictures. We appreciate that the camera is made of metal, but that's only a good start at making a durable imager. A camera is only as tough as its most vulnerable part, and the EX-S600's lens assembly and unsealed battery and memory compartment are pretty vulnerable. If the color and size were wrapped around a good imaging system, if the camera were tough enough to go where it can fit, and if it were easy to hold securely, we'd be enthusiastic."
