Leica M8 Rangefinder Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 4.67 (out of 10)
Review Diary: "At Photokina the Leica M8 was clearly a highlight. This legend film camera made its digital debut. The design goal by Leica was to keep the look and feel as close to the Leica M7 film camera as possible. We think they succeeded. It is hard to resist the feel and aesthetics of this camera. Many aspects of this camera are different than all the other digital cameras (mainly DSLRs). The exception is the Epson R1 rangefinder camera which we unfortunately never got to use.

After reading some comments on the net we thought the noise would be more an issue with this camera. Overall the M8 can produce very sharp and detailed images. The noise levels are not like a Canon 5D but still very reasonable in our opinion. This is the first camera for many years that we really have to learn to use..."

Review (Summary): "One of the M8’s prime attractions for Leica aficionados is that it provides a digital imaging platform for Leica M lenses, a generally outstanding optical arsenal that represents a substantial investment on the part of Leica users. And while the M8 is not the first digital rangefinder camera to accept M lenses (that honor going to the cleverly innovative 6-megapixel Epson R-D1, now out of production), it is the first to incorporate all the classic Leica features and styling cues, along with a specially configured, Kodak-made 10-megapixel CCD and sophisticated firmware designed to optimize imaging performance with M-mount lenses. ...

Well then, is the Leica M8 a real Leica M worthy of standing side by side with its illustrious 35mm counterparts, the MP and M7? On balance, we’d have to say, yes. While no digital camera can expect to be pre-eminent for decades at a time like the 35mm M Leicas, and the M8 will inevitably be surpassed in five years by the Leica M9 with more megapixels and even better image quality, the Leica M8 is about as good as it can be given the current state of digital imaging technology. ..."

Review (Summary): "When I first got my hands on the M8 I have to admit it was my first experience of a rangefinder camera, I was also skeptical that there was still a place for such a significantly manually controlled camera in such an automatic world where every new camera removes one more layer of control from the photographer. And yet there we have the exact reason why the M8 and rangefinders continue to succeed (once you discover them), they re-connect you to your subject, they draw you into the scene (big viewfinder, no mirror black-out) and they force you to make decisions about focus and depth of field which to most digital SLR users are 'lost in the half-press'.

... I have to admit that I've been turned, from a skeptic to a believer, certainly the M8 isn't a camera everyone is going to afford, but a rangefinder is certainly something any 'serious' photographer should try at some point in their life. ..."
