Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.75 (out of 10)
Review: "Tamron (www.tamron.com) produces two series of lenses aimed specially at users of digital SLRs. Their Digitally Integrated Design (aka Di) optics are optimized to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLRs. Tamron's Di-II lenses, on the other hand, are expressly designed for SLRs with image sensors 24x16mm or smaller and consequently, are not compatible with 35mm film cameras or digital SLRs with larger sensors.

Based on all of my tests, the SP 17-50mm f/2.8 lens is sharp and focuses remarkably fast. The lens has a triple cam structure in which cams zoom and focus within its three-layer barrel improving AF precision for close-ups and any torque irregularities when zooming. Autofocus is fast and focus was crisp even when working under low light, low contrast situations...."

Review: "The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens delivers very good image quality in a small, light, fast and affordable package. Add in the very popular focal length range and you have a lens that is just right for many digital SLR camera owners. The early-in-its-lifecycle popularity this lens is enjoying substantiates this claim.

In the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens, we have a very useful tool. Since it is small and light, we can take it everywhere. Since it is fast (f/2.8), we can use it in low light and indoors - and to stop action. Since it has very good image quality, we can use it for important shots. This list along with a nice general-purpose focal length range fills the requirements of a huge range of photographic opportunities (I'll let you think of them). For the price, the Tamron 17-50 is a bargain lens."

Review: "The SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras, expanding the product concept of the popular SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

This was another lens that was a really pleasant surprise when we ran it through its paces in our test lab; its performance was really excellent in practically every parameter, and it sells for a very attractive price..."
