Olympus E-400 Digital SLR Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 5.67 (out of 10)
Review: "The E400 delivers many of the innovations Olympus has become known for in a compact Four Thirds DSLR. The E400 is slated only for the European market, for a list price of £700 ($1324) with a kit lens. At 5.1 x 3.5 x 2 inches, the E400 with its ultrasonic dust-control mechanism proves that Olympus doesn't have to make cameras as big as the E-300 or E-330 to remain competitive in the high-megapixel DSLR market.
The E-400 is in a suddenly crowded market ? there are several 10-megapixel DSLRs marketed for beginners. It costs a bit more than some of them, namely the Canon Rebel XTi (EOS 400 in Europe, where the E-400 will compete) The Nikon D80 has better controls, and the Sony Alpha adds stabilization as well as dust removal. The E-400 brings very little distinction to the party."

| Review (Summary): "...The E-400 comes pretty much everything you could expect from a modern DSLR. It features a 10MP sensor in Olympus' unusual 4:3 aspect ratio (same as non-widescreen PC screens and TVs). The sensor has a 2x crop compared to 35mm, so the 14-42mm kit lens is equivalent to 28-84mm in 35mm terms. The camera offers ISO 100 to 1600.
... Olympus has tried hard to bring simple, portable DSLR photography to everyone and have come close to achieving that. If you need a really portable DSLR, the E-400 would probably suit you. If budget is tight, you'll find it hard to get a 10MP DSLR for anything like this price from another manufacturer - if you can spend a little more then there are other options around." |

| Review: "The Olympus E-400 has a unique claim to fame - it's currently the smallest and lightest digital SLR camera in the world, weighing just 375g and measuring 129.5mm (W) x 91mm (H) x 53mm (D). Inside this diminutive body is a 10 megapixel sensor, 31 automatic shooting modes, 2.5 inch LCD screen and built-in dust protection via its Supersonic Wave Filter.
..Overall image quality is good enough even though some images may benefit from extra sharpening. Colors appear natural and accurately rendered, and it is difficult to spot any chromatic aberrations or any evidence of purple fringing, even in challenging lighting conditions. The E-400's 100-1600 ISO range should enable photographers enough flexibility to capture images in both bright and dull illumination. Its lowest rating outputs virtually noise free files up to ISO 800. It is only at its highest setting that any grain becomes noticeable in shadow areas.." |

| Review: "On its announcement in July 2006, the E400 entered the world of digital photography as the Worlds smallest and lightest DSLR; Nikon has introduced the also svelte D40 since then but it is light four million pixels compared to the E400.
This is far too expensive for an "entry level" model and particularly so when there are cheaper 10-megapixel models on the shop shelves already, which would be a shame because it will prevent many people from buying this camera when they should, because I can heartily recommend this camera to all those who might consider it." |

| Review: "The new Olympus E-400 has the difficult task of competing with models like the EOS 400D from Canon, the Nikon D80 and the surprisingly versatile Pentax K10D digital SLR camera. None of these cameras, however, have the light and compact features of the world's smallest SLR. The Olympus E400 is a digital SLR camera from the FourThirds system which was pioneered by Olympus.
... In regard to quality, the Olympus E-400 is an excellent digital SLR camera which is extremely easy to use and very user friendly. A camera for the masses? Definitely! Die hard photographers may look for a SLR camera that is more in the direction of a (semi-)professional camera, but this is a great camera for anyone taking their first steps in digital SLR photography!" |

| Review: "It's a general rule of thumb that the smaller a digital camera is, the fewer the functions, the more it is aimed at the beginners market where price, not performance and features, is the main criteria. Well forget that with the Olympus E-400, it's a bantamweight with the punching power of a light heavyweight, as Duncan Evans reveals while testing Olympus' lightest and latest, Four Thirds Standard SLR.
With lots of picture modes and a generally simplified body control system, this is a DSLR that beginners can pick up and use. It produces very good results, and with a high 10Mp resolution can equally be used for landscapes and portraits. The autofocus is fast and accurate, but lacks sophisticated tracking and selection options. The ISO range is decent, but gets very noisy at 1600, even with noise reduction." |

| Review: "Launched in September this year the E-400 is a 10 megapixel DSLR that is competing directly with the Nikon D80, Sony Alpha A100, Pentax K10 and the Canon EOS 400D, so it's certainly got its work cut out for it. It has a list price of £849.99 in a kit with two zoom lenses of 14-42mm and 40-150mm (equivalent to 28-84mm and 80-300mm respectively) and although it is available for around £800 online, it is apparently not currently available body-only, which makes it significantly more expensive to buy than any of those models except the Nikon.
The Olympus E-400 is a very accomplished camera, a serious photographic tool that will appeal to both professionals and advanced amateurs. It offers a combination of easily controlled versatility, exceptional performance and superb image quality that should secure it a place in the top rank of mid-range digital SLRs. The kit price may seem expensive, but it includes two excellent lenses that perfectly complement this outstanding camera." |

| Hands-on Preview: "There have been rumours that Olympus would launch a super-compact camera based on its Four Thirds interchangeable lens camera platform and those rumours turned out to be well founded. Today the wraps came off the new ten megapixel Olympus E-400, easily the smallest and lightest DSLR to date. It comes with two new matching compact kit lenses spanning the (equivalent) lens range of 28 through to 300mm.
While all this is interesting information, the bad news is that if you are not in Europe or Japan, we understand you won't be able to buy this camera locally to start with. We have been told to expect sales here in Europe to commence in November, though no prices have been revealed." |
