Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
The model looks a lot like a reflex camera, except for the possibility to interchange lenses and in stead of an optical viewfinder, the user will have to settle for a high quality electronic viewfinder. The DiMAGE 7 was already introduced 2 years ago and was the first prosumer digital camera with a respectable 5 Megapixel resolution......

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2 is the latest in a family of DiMAGE electronic SLR-style models that stretches back to the original DiMAGE 7, the first five-megapixel prosumer camera, introduced over three years ago (early 2001). As you'll read below, the new DiMAGE A2 carries on the proud tradition of the line, with a host of innovations and improvements over the previous DiMAGE A1 flagship model.

Just about the time that many folks thought the pixel race was grinding to a halt, along came a new batch of prosumer digicams that combined 8-megapixel resolution with the versatility of a built-in zoom lens, an integrated electronic flash, and a host of advanced features and manual controls. One of the best of the bunch is the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2.

There are now, or will be by early April, 2004, a total of five crossover digicams using the Sony 8 Megapixel 2/3" imaging chip. These include the Sony F828, Olympus C-8080, Canon Pro 1, Nikon 8700, and the subject of this review the Konica Minolta A2. Since these five cameras all use the same chip, and most have fairly similarly configured lenses, it is very interesting to have a look at how these cameras differ, not only in their design, features and construction, but also in the image quality that they are able to obtain.

Back in January 2003 Konica and Minolta announced that they would merge and form the single company 'Konica Minolta'. Just over a year since that announcement, at PMA 2004 the new Konica Minolta announce four new cameras which carry the new Konica Minolta branding and logo. The DiMAGE A2 is a follow-on to the DiMAGE A1. Essentially this camera is identical to the A1 apart from its sensor, the DiMAGE A1 had a 5 megapixel 2/3" type CCD, the new DiMAGE A2 has an 8 megapixel 2/3" type CCD.

The release of Minolta's five megapixel DiMAGE A1 late last year was rather ill-fated. Just eight days later, Sony amazed us all with news of its DSC-F828, (a full eight megapixels), which would retail at just under the A1's $1,200 (U.S.) price tag. Five days later, Canon jumped in with its size 16's, by offering a six megapixel entry-level SLR at a $1,000 (U.S.), including lens. The A1 suddenly didn't look quite as appetising, anti-shake or no anti-shake. Who in their right mind would part with the best part of a grand for an A1, when the same money could buy an eight megapixel compact, or better still, a genuine D-SLR? The much heralded DiMAGE A2, with an 8Mp CCD and a reduced calorie price-tag, is the result........

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2 ($1099 list price) is the 8 Megapixel version of the popular DiMAGE A1 camera from 2003. If you don't know anything about the A1, here's what you missed: it features a unique CCD with image stabilization, which gives you 2-3 more stops than a non-stabilized camera. Simply put, you can handhold the camera at slower shutter speeds than you could with a regular camera. Add a 7X Minolta GT lens, full manual controls (and then some), flip-up LCD display, predictive autofocus, and robust performance, and you've got quite a camera. Three other features new to the A2 include a super high resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF), high resolution movie mode, and support for USB 2.0 high speed.
