Samsung Pro815 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.50 (out of 10)
Review: "The Samsung Pro815 is a remarkable camera for a number of reasons. First, its huge 15x zoom Schneider-Kreuznach lens is the most powerful on any non-SLR digital camera. Secondly, it also has the biggest monitor on any digital camera, with a massive 3.5in screen. Thirdly, it has the largest battery of any digital camera, with 1900mAh of charge capacity. And most remarkably of all, it's a Samsung.

The Samsung Pro815 is a truly superb camera, with superior build quality, outstanding design, a great range of versatile, creative and in some cases unique features, very good performance and outstanding picture quality. The only real let-down is the sluggish autofocus, but other than that it's a serious alternative to a digital SLR."

Review: "Because of its large size, when you first get your hands on the Samsung Pro815, you'll probably think you're holding a full D-SLR. In fact, it's a little bigger than some D-SLRs, such as the Canon Rebel XT and the new Rebel XTi. This camera has some great features, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of taking photos, using it is a hit-or-miss experience.

n my lab tests, I found the camera had less noise than our Editors' Choice superzoom, the Panasonic Lumix FZ30. Color was quite accurate and vivid. But I did see some significant fringing. Overall, I thought the exposure was decent, although I noticed my daylight shot had slightly blown-out highlights and my flash shot was slightly underexposed. Still, my flash test shot revealed a decent, even flash."

"Samsung has arrived at the super zoom / bridge camera party very late, but it has certainly made quite an entrance. The Pro815's designers obviously decided that the key to success was to take the successful formula established by the likes of Panasonic with its FZ series and 'super size' it in every way possible. Thus we have the world's biggest zoom range, world's biggest LCD screen, world's highest capacity Li-Ion battery and a list of features as long as your arm - all in a single camera. "

Review: "Back before Samsung put its name on Pentax dSLRs, the company unveiled the 8-megapixel Digimax Pro 815, a superzoom with specs that make it look extremely impressive. It has a class-topping 15X optical, 28mm-to-420mm, f/2.2-to-f/4.6 zoom lens, along with a big 3.5-inch LCD screen on its back, and another 1.4-inch color LCD on top so you can brace the camera against your chest or hip and still frame your shot.

Noise is probably the Pro 815's biggest liability. Even at ISO 50, there is noticeable noise which looks akin to what you might find at ISO 200 on cleaner cameras. At ISO 100, it becomes only more noticeable, though images are still usable. At ISO 200, noise became much worse, obscuring finer details, though images are still passable when printed on paper as large as letter size."
