Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM Lens Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 10.00 (out of 10)
Review: "This has been one of the most-requested lenses on the site for us to test, so we're very pleased to finally be able to share our test results with everyone. - And what a lens it is! This will come as no surprise if you've read the glowing user reviews below, but it's always good to see our test results fall right in line with users' experiences.

Paying a lot of money for a lens won't always buy you great performance, but the Canon 24-105mm f/4 L is one lens that easily justifies its price."

Review (Summary): "The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS is a 4.4x standard zoom lens for Canon full format (and APS-C) DSLRs. It's often sold as part of a "kit" with the EOS 5D (II) although you shouldn't mistake this lens with the average el-cheapo kit lenses which are common in the APS-C DSLR world. ...

The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS is surely one of the better standard zoom lenses for full format EOS DSLRs but it's not perfect within this scope nonetheless. The resolution figures are generally very decent except for a pronounced border softness at 70mm @ f/4. ..."

Though I have just started to use the new 24-105mm, and unlike Bill have not done any rigorous testing, the frames that I have taken have been very impressive, and the lens' handling has been exemplary. As this is being written I leave in a week's time for a major workshop / shoot which I'll be conducting in China during the second two weeks of October, and the 24-105 has definitely taken its place in my bag, replacing the 24-70 as my general purpose medium focal length zoom.

Review: "The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM was announced in August 2005 as a lightweight standard zoom lens for professionals. Introduced on the same day as the EOS 5D, it's an ideal match for Canon's 'affordable' full frame body, although equally suited to other full-frame bodies including the 1Ds Mark II and 35mm models.

The lens performed well across its range, particularly in terms of corner sharpness at wide angle, while essentially matching our EF 85mm f1.8 prime in terms of resolving power. We were also impressed with the Image Stabilization which allowed us to hand hold at much slower shutter speeds than normal. Compared to lenses designed for bodies with smaller sensors though, it suffered from a worse degree of light fall-off, but this is par for the course for wide-angle lenses designed for full-frame bodies."
