Nikon Coolpix L3 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 1.00 (out of 10)
Review: "Sitting snuggly in the middle of Nikon's three new entry-level cameras, the Coolpix L3 promises a 5.1-megapixel resolution with a smattering of neat subject modes all wrapped in a stylish package.

Given the L3's price, nice styling and clever ergonomics, it looks great value for money and while it does handle well and look nice, the final image quality lets the side down in the end. Perhaps there is a firmware upgrade in the offing to sort the fringing and highlight loss problems, but either way and on this performance, all I can say is ? could do better."

Review: "Whoever revamped the Coolpix line this past year definitely deserves kudos - all of the new Nikon models introduced at the PMA convention in Florida earlier this year look like they've spent some time in the gym. For a camera that takes double AA batteries, the Nikon L3 is one of the slimmest I've seen with a curving metallic gun-metal grey chassis that feels great in your hand.

While I understand Nikon is aiming this camera at novice and first-time users who might not want much manual control, some flexibility would be appreciated especially considering that many competing models not only offer manual ISO control these days, but even Shutter and Aperture Priority in their entry-level models. So overall the Nikon Coolpix L3 is a mixed bag with enough good qualities to warrant a modest recommendation, but enough cons to keep it off the Dave's Picks list."

Review: "Nikon's L series got a big push this year with three new models and offers the Coolpix L3 as the only new 5 megapixel camera for 2006. The L3 provides some of Nikon's reliable features to help you take better pictures. But have they addressed the fidgety flash we have experienced here at Bytesector all too often?

Daytime shooting with this camera was fantastic. Images had sharp contrast, great colours, and no blurring. I had a few pictures where the camera didn't focus on anything in particular and the whole picture was out of focus, but these were very few. In the daylight and strong indoor light, I had no problem with camera shake. This unusual feat (at least for me) in a 5 megapixel camera impressed me very much."

Review: "The Nikon Coolpix L3 is the midrange member of Nikon's simple, inexpensive L-series digital cameras. The 5-megapixel camera sports a 3X optical zoom lens, a handful of useful scene modes, and a small price tag. It's not the fastest, sharpest, or sleekest digital camera on the market, but this little shooter produces good-looking images for the price.

Despite a limited feature set and sluggish performance, the Nikon Coolpix L3 produces good-looking images, especially for a camera in its price range. If you're on a budget and don't need a lot of options, the Coolpix L3 might be a good choice for you."
