Nikon Coolpix 8700 Review
|
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.33 (out of 10)
Clearly based on the Coolpix 5700 which we reviewed in September 2002, the body of the Coolpix 8700 is effectively identical externally to the 5700 with minor exceptions in the appearance and labelling of some of the buttons. The 8700's body is composed of black metal and plastic surfaces on a magnesium alloy chassis and a rubberized grip with the trademark red stripe.

| As I say before each of my Nikon reviews, Nikon is one of the names that literally needs no introduction in the world of photography. Long a leader in the film world, they now offer cameras for both the serious amateur and working professional, in both the film and digital worlds. The new Nikon Coolpix 8700 is the latest in a long line of Nikon digital cameras that have helped define the state of the art in prosumer cameras from the early days of the digital revolution. With an 8-megapixel sensor, an 8x zoom lens with ED glass, and the panoply of advanced features we've come to expect from the upper end of Nikon's digicam line, the Coolpix 8700 is poised to compete at the very top of the "prosumer" digital camera market...........

| The Nikon Coolpix 8700 is a true muscleman. The camera is the present top model and knows how to handle its position. The results simply can be called: excellent. Many automatic options take over from manual settings. When I look at the test images, and compare the images taken in automatic mode with the images taken when using my own preferred settings, the first lot has my preference. The optical range in such a compact camera is a joy to work with. It would be nice if the Nikon design department is able to develop a bright lens to give the telephoto range a good lift. |

| The eight megapixel, eight times optical zoom Coolpix 8700 was announced on January 28th, 2004, a year and eight months since the five megapixel Coolpix 5700 on which it is based. The 8700 enters the eight megapixel fray which is currently made up of another four digital cameras; the Canon PowerShot Pro1, Sony DSC-F828, Olympus C-8080 Wide Zoom and the Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2.
