Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.50 (out of 10)
Review: "The big news in the super compact Canon camera range is the addition of an optical stabilizer on the new PowerShot SD700 IS (called IXUS 800 in Europe), the first in that series to offer such a system.

With the SD700, the stabilizer is even more valuable since the lens, at the maximum telephoto setting, has an aperture of f5.5 - a noticeably smaller aperture than the f2.8 available at the wide-angle end - which could increase the likelihood of camera-shake.

The image quality of the PowerShot SD700 IS is nothing short of excellent. Three levels of JPEG compression are available to record images, and the level that applies the least compression, and therefore guarantees the highest image quality, is the Superfine setting."

Review: "The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS Digital ELPH ($499) isn't just another ultra-compact camera: it also features a 4X zoom lens (versus the 3X models usually found on such cameras) and an optical image stabilization system (which will give you sharper photos). Neither of these features were on the PowerShot SD550 which the SD700 replaces. Other changes include improved battery life, a higher resolution LCD, and (unfortunately) a weaker flash.

.... the PowerShot SD700 IS took very good quality pictures. They were well-exposed, with pleasing color, low noise (as shown above), and minimal purple fringing. Canon cameras tend to have a "smooth" look to the photos, which some folks may consider soft. If you agree, you can turn up the sharpness a notch by using the custom color My Colors feature."

Review: "Announced just before PMA 2006 in February, the 6 megapixel SD700 IS is the new flagship model in the long-running and very successful IXUS / Digital ELPH range. The SD 700 IS is the first Canon ultra-compact ever to feature optical image stabilization, and the first to sport a 4x zoom lens, though in most other respects it is very similar to the previous 'top of the range' SD550.

The SD 700 IS is, in essence, everything a pocket camera should be; fast, easy to use, well designed and - above all - reliable. When you've got little or no manual control the reliability and accuracy of the automatic focus, exposure and white balance systems is of paramount importance, and it is here where the SD 700 IS really shows its mettle...."

Review: "The Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS (Powershot SD700 IS in the U.S.) is a 6 megapixel digital camera with a 2.5 inch LCD screen and optical viewfinder. For the first time ever on a Canon compact, the IXUS 800 features image stabilizer technology to help combat camera-shake. Canon have also extended the optical zoom lens to 4x, giving an effective focal length of 35-140mm.

Easy to use, reliable, fast in operation ? and delivering pictures that, for the most part, require little if any post processing ? the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS suggests itself as one of the better (perhaps even one of the best) compromises between style, features and portability. Its zoom range is better than many fashion-orientated compacts at 4x, the LCD is large and clear enough to make framing and reviewing images a stress free process, while real optical image stabilization on such a camera, if not quite perfect, is still a real plus."

Review: "Compared to its siblings in Canon's SD line of compact point-and-shoot cameras, the top-end SD700 IS packs more features into its small frame than higher resolution. It shares the same 6-megapixel sensor as its peers, the PowerShot SD600 and SD630 but has a longer zoom lens and image stabilization to curb blurry photos.

Image quality, much like performance, rates as excellent. The SD700 IS reproduces color very well, and images are clean with few processing flaws. Photos remain consistent and noise-free at low-to-moderate ISO speeds and are acceptable even at ISO 400. At ISO 800, we noticed some distinct noise in our photos, but it was a clean, grainlike noise that left the images very usable."

Review: "The PowerShot SD700 IS, the first of Canon's trendy Digital Elph line to offer image stabilization. The camera also provides a 4x optical zoom lens and several improvements that are fairly new to Canon cameras.

The Canon PowerShot SD700 IS has an expensive retail price tag of $499. This camera does have a nice feature set, complete with 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD screen, and image stabilization. However, this probably isn’t enough to warrant dropping five Ben Franklins on the SD700. Canon probably anticipates that the sexy body and strong feature set will lure consumers to pay the price, but perhaps they forgot that other manufacturers have similar offerings for much less."

Review: "The successful series of digital IXUS cameras brings us the Canon Digital IXUS 800 IS digital camera. This new top model from the Digital IXUS series is equipped with the latest technology, and comes in the trendiest "jacket" of the series. As far as specifications are concerned, the Canon IXUS 800 IS leads Canon's compact camera range; not only does the camera have the stylish looks that the IXUS line is famed for, it also features a 4x optical zoom and the same optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology that is used in Canon's professional EF lenses to reduce blur caused by movement of the photographer's hand.

The images are of excellent quality, the colour rendition is more than sufficient, and the superb white balance ensures hardly any false cast can be detected. The fast DIGIC II processor has already proven itself more than once, and does not let the Canon IXUS 800 IS down. The camera is pleasantly fast, processes the 6 Megapixels at full speed, and is equipped with additional power economical features and a swift reaction time."

Review: "With its new top-of-line "Digital ELPH" camera, the PowerShot SD700 IS, Canon makes a compelling argument for doing away with flash photography altogether. Along with being the first compact digital camera in Canon's line to offer its optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, the six-megapixel SD700 IS has selectable ISO settings of up to 800, making the camera extremely light sensitive and able to shoot effectively in dusk-like conditions without a flash.

There's no getting around the fact that the Canon SD700 IS is an expensive product. Just under $400 is a lot to spend for a 6-megapixel compact digital camera when some competing models are offering 10 megapixels for the same price. But if you can look beyond megapixels - and with the SD700 IS, you absolutely should - this new flagship Digital ELPH is a great value."
