Samsung Digimax L85 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.06 (out of 10)
Review: "The Samsung Digimax L85 is a surprisingly functional 8-megapixel digital camera. Its chunky, retro design belies its very flexible, high-end feature set, including the unique ability to output HDMI . Granted, HDMI in a digital camera is more novel than utilitarian, but the wealth of manual settings and image features will be appreciated by anyone who wants to take solid photos. As long as you don't mind its propensity for fringing on edges and the lack of a fast burst mode, you'll find the Samsung Digimax L85 a versatile, quality shooter.

The Samsung Digimax L85 produced very attractive images with only a single significant flaw. The photos reproduced color well and displayed fine details without distortion or compression artifacts. Even at the higher ISO settings, noise was minimal and images were quite clear."

Review: "The Samsung L85 is a small (though not tiny) zoom compact boasting 8 million pixels a 5X optical zoom and a couple of features you won't find anywhere else such as HDMI interface. On paper we placed it as the second best value in our £250 camera roundup. Let's see how it performs in the real world.

The Schneider-Kreuznach lens delivers plenty of detail and the 8 million pixels of the sensor are capable of great results. As we often find with high MP compacts, there's a tendency for the out of focus areas of the shot to look a little plasticky or smeary. It's interesting that this is particularly apparent on compact Kodaks which also use Schneider-Kreuznach lenses but the L85 is a lot more restrained in its processing. Results are generally very pleasant and you should have no problem getting decent A3 prints with a little care."

Review: "One of the most consistent complaints I get from digital camera owners concerns missing crucial shots, whether it is a mom who can't record her baby's precious smile or a dad having a hard time capturing his son hitting a baseball. Most times, this happens because of shutter lag, the delay between when you press the shutter release button and the time the shutter actually opens. That's also one reason I find the Samsung Digimax L85 compact digital camera so disappointing. My tests show it has the worst shutter lag of any camera I've tested to date."
