Canon Powershot A540 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.50 (out of 10)
Review: 'The Canon A540 breaks the $300 mark with a 6.0-megapixel sensor, a 4x optical zoom lens, a broadcast quality Movie mode and full manual control. It's an impressive offering for such a low price.
The Canon A540 also boosts performance in some other areas as well, sporting a huge 2.5" rear-panel LCD in addition to its real-image optical viewfinder, and adding aperture-priority and shutter-priority exposure modes, welcome options for more sophisticated users. ISO light-sensitivity ranges from 80 to 800. Other exposure modes include fully automatic and fully manual, plus a wide range of scene modes in between, and a "My Colors" menu that offers special effects such as Vivid and Neutral, Light or Dark skin, and Custom color adjustments. An Underwater scene mode even adjusts color balance and exposure for use with an optional underwater housing."

| Review: "The first point of note about Canon’s competitively priced A540 – which upgrades last year’s Canon A520 – is that it manages to fit in both a 2.5in screen plus, as a battery-saving alternative, an optical viewfinder above.
Photos delivered by Canon compacts are some of the best in their class and the A540 is no exception, delivering colourful yet naturalistic shots when plenty of detail." |

| Review: "The Canon PowerShot A540 ($300) is a midrange digital camera that offers a 6 Megapixel CCD, 4X optical zoom (instead of the usual 3X), large 2.5" LCD display, full manual controls, and a VGA movie mode. The A540, along with its 5 Megapixel sibling, the A530, replace Canon's extremely popular A510 and A520 models from last year. Both cameras use Canon's DIGIC II image processor.
Camera performance was very good. The A540 starts up in just 1.3 seconds, it focuses fairly quickly, and shutter lag was not a problem. Low light focusing was very good, thanks to the A540's AF-assist lamp. One of the benefits of the camera's DIGIC II processor is a great continuous shooting mode: the camera can keep firing away at 2.3 frames/second until the memory card is full (as long as you're using a high speed card). Battery life is excellent on the PowerShot A540." |

| Review: "Launched in February this year as a replacement for the popular A520, the PowerShot A540 is one of five new cameras in Canon's A series, and is the mid-range model of the bunch. It has a 6.0 megapixel CCD, 2.5 inch LCD, 4x optical zoom lens and a maximum ISO setting of 800. For the casual snapshot photographer it features a range of program and scene modes and an idiot-proof full-auto setting, while for the more adventurous user it has an optical viewfinder and a full range of manual controls.
The A450 is a very capable camera and good value for money, and would make an excellent choice for anyone who wants to learn more about photography before moving on to a semi-pro zoom or DSLR. It may lack some features found on higher end models, but it is a good all rounder and produces top quality results." |

| Review: "Canon's "A" PowerShot range of digital compacts are aimed at the more consumer end of the market, unlike the company's more stylish and arguably more sophisticated IXUS counterparts. Nevertheless, just because the new A540 may be built without the enthusiast in mind, it does not mean it lacks a powerful photo punch in terms of both specification and shooting features.
Image quality is good overall (noise issues notwithstanding) and given the target market, easily good enough for most users. The 540 is easily able to provide prints up to, and over A4, there's bags of detail on show. The metering is excellent, particularly the evaluative metering set up; white balance control is good too, particularly in the Auto setting. White balance can be fine tuned or custom set to match the actual lighting, which can provide a richer looking colour and provide a more neutral white." |

| Review: "Solid image quality, usable ISO 800 performance, and a full set of manual controls make the Canon PowerShot A540 an excellent choice for photo enthusiasts looking for an almost-pocketable second camera, or for budding photographers who aren't ready to move up to a superzoom EVF model or digital SLR. Only a flash that's slow to recycle lessens the appeal of this camera's 4X zoom lens, 6-megapixel resolution, and otherwise excellent performance. There are even more than a dozen scene modes for those times when you're tempted to switch on the autopilot." |
