HP Photosmart B9180 Printer Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.66 (out of 10)
Video Review: "Hewlett Packard (HP) can never be accused of sitting back on their laurels, in fact quite the opposite, they have been busy developing their own range of printers, inks, media and other digital equipment. The market is very lucrative for the right product, get it right and you have a runaway best seller.

In February 2006 HP announced a new printer the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 A3 printer. This printer is clearly aimed at the professional and creative photographer. The printer is built like a Sherman tank and is going to withstand heavy duty professional use. The B9180 uses HPs newly formulated Vivera Pigment inks for outstanding colour quality. I have been using the B9180 for the last six months and the prints I am now producing surpass all other printers that I have tested. The printer does have one or two quirks, but these are mainly due to drivers which are still being worked on as I write. For a change the Mac drivers are ready before the Windows drivers."

Review: "HP produces printers for the consumer and professional inkjet markets, but until recently, not much for the semi-professional or sole-trader professional. The Photosmart Pro B9180 fills this gap and also showcases HP's scaleable print technology, in which it's placing a lot of faith for future developments.

This is a big printer, but has a solid, professional feel. Large areas of plastic in A3+ printers often feel flimsy, but not here. It has a functional design - boxy, but with a curved front edge. The main paper tray, which can be used for any paper from 15 x 10cm to A3+ paper, extends, so you only need to open it up when using larger sizes. The cover telescopes out, too.

HP's new pigment-based Vivera ink technology takes a lot of beating. The vibrancy of color prints is superb, marred only by slight darkening of black and white, which may need some compensation. Put simply, if we wanted a medium format inkjet photo printer and had less than £500 to spend ($500-$700 U.S.), we'd buy the Photosmart Pro B9180.

Review: "First announced in February 2006 at the PMA show, the new Photosmart Pro B9180 from Hewlett Packard is one of two new competitors to the Epson R2400 (the other being the Canon iP9500). Although 13x19 inkjet printers have been available for some time, including the highly regarded Photosmart 8750, the HP B9180 is the first pigment ink photo printer from HP, and the first Photosmart printer to bear the Pro label.

Overall, the HP B9180 is hard to beat. The image quality is first rate, and with the move to pigment inks the print life and media options are excellent. I do wish the printer had a roll option as many of the fine art papers I buy are on a roll. To be fair to HP, only Epson offers this option at this size. HP has clearly put a great deal of effort into their new Vivera pigment inks to give the user more color and dynamic range from their prints than what was previously available. If you've been holding off on moving to pigments for this reason, the wait is finally over."
