Nikon Coolpix L4 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.50 (out of 10)
Review: "For most first-time digital camera users, the bells and whistles on many of today's high-end point-and-shoots are more daunting than desired. The Nikon Coolpix L4 ($149.95 list) is the fourth member of the Nikon Coolpix L-clan. Novices will appreciate its simple menu navigation and useful in-camera features such as cropping and repairing dark images. I was satisfied with both its picture quality and in-camera features, but the lack of a viewfinder and the inability to record video with sound hurt the camera's rating. Still, if you're a camera newbie or just need to return to the basics, the Nikon Coolpix L4 is a good choice."

| Review: "Ho-hum. That's all I can say about the styling of the P4. The metal and plastic case looks like just about every digital camera on the shelf. Still it feels substantial, is nicely compact, measuring 3.6 x 2.4 x 1.2 (WHD, in inches) and tips the scales at 7 ounces with battery and card. When powered down, it easily fits in your pocket.
Ho-hum. That’s all I can say about the styling of the P4. The metal and plastic case looks like just about every digital camera on the shelf. Although the Coolpix P4 has its flaws - uneven focusing, noise at high ISOs and a funky control layout - you could do a lot worse for an 8MP primarily point-and-shoot digicam. Picture quality-for the most part-was quite good and you’d be pleased with the results." |

| Review: "Along with a 4.0MP CCD image sensor, the Nikon Coolpix L4 has a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2-inch LCD screen and Nikon's helpful Feature System which includes D-Lighting to improve underexposed photos; Face Priority AF; In-Camera Cropping; and Best Shot Selector which lets you take a series of photos and picks out the one with the sharpest focus. Because it's aimed at beginners, the Nikon L4 also has oodles of Scene Modes, 14 in all with four with Scene Assist to help you compose your pictures.
For an entry-level camera, the Nikon Coolpix L4 does a passable performance, with a 4.0-megapixel CCD sensor, a reasonable 3x Nikkor optical zoom, and improved overall ergonomics. For the novice shooter, the Nikon L4 has a good feature set which along with Nikon's D-Lighting, Face Priority AF, and Best Shot Selector, has 14 scene modes including four with Scene Assist. As a basic snapshooter, the L4 will serve just fine, capturing images sharp enough for 5x7, with punchy color." |

| Review: "The Nikon Coolpix L4 is the least expensive of Nikon's low-end L-series line of digital cameras. The L4 has a small, 4-megapixel sensor, a 3X optical zoom lens, and a handful of scene preset modes but few high-end settings. Though slow and not very versatile, it puts out some pretty good pictures for its price.
Images from the Coolpix L4 reproduced colors faithfully but still suffered from some irksome issues. We noticed distinct purple fringing along high-contrast edges, and some finer details were softened in postprocessing. Despite these flaws, our images generally turned out clear and noise-free."
