Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 4.50 (out of 10)
Review: "Like its predecessor, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1, the new Sony DSC-H2 digital camera takes direct aim at the Long Zoom Family Camera market, offering an impressive 12x optical zoom lens along with full manual exposure control, while not getting too complicated for novice users. For the most part, the H2 is an update of the H1, with a larger, 6.0-megapixel CCD, expanded ISO options (80 to 1,000 equivalents), and expanded partial manual exposure control modes (Aperture and Shutter Priority shooting options).
The Sony DSC-H2 is fairly fast on the draw, with faster than average shutter response, a smooth and responsive zoom, and very good shot to shot cycle times. Optical quality is very good, but we were disappointed with the high chromatic aberration and softness in the corners at telephoto; that's part of the tradeoff found in a very long zoom that we think most will find acceptable."

| Review: "We praised the H1 - Sony's first foray into this crowded part of the market - as not only a surprisingly mature, well-rounded product, but one offering performance and output that put it very near the top of the tree. The H2 doesn't add a great deal, but it does offer some minor improvements in image quality, a few new features and a little more resolution.
Compared to the most obvious competitors - the Canon S3 IS and Panasonic DMC-FZ7 - the Sony H2 scores highly in handling, image quality and ease of use, and only really falls short in a couple of areas; burst mode, focus speed in low light (specifically at the long end of the zoom) and the slightly underwhelming movie mode" |

| Review: "Sony was quite late to the megazoom parade with its Cyber Shot DSC-H1, but this follow-up model is more in step with the rest of the marchers. The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H2's 12X zoom lens now carries the Carl Zeiss moniker, resolution has been bumped up to 6 megapixels, and sensitivity has been stretched all the way out to ISO 1,000. Soccer moms-who might not want the hassle of an interchangeable lens-should find the H2 appealing for its massive zoom range, its pleasing image quality, and its broad array of both automatic and manual exposure controls. But advanced amateurs who need low noise at higher ISOs might want to look elsewhere." |

| Review: "With a massive 12x optical zoom lens equivalent to 36-432mm on a 35mm camera, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 is Sony's current representative in the ultra-zoom class of compact digital cameras. The DSC-H2 has a 6 megapixel sensor and features Sony's image stabilisation system, called Super Steady Shot, to ensure sharper results when hand-holding the camera at the longer focal lengths.
Enthusiasts who either don't want, or can't afford, to stretch to a DSLR will get the most from the Sony Cybershot DSC-H2, along with beginners who eventually will want to do more than point and shoot without having to upgrade. It manages to satisfy both camps with amazingly few compromises. Plastic build and chunky Fisher Price looks aside, it's responsive, takes decent images and is keenly priced...." |

| Preview: "After a successful run with its first ultra zoom Cyber-shot DSC-H1, Sony released the 7.2 megapixel H5 and 6 megapixel H2. These digital cameras come with Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 12x zoom lenses and the Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization that came on the popular H1. The new models include high ISO sensitivities with a top rating of ISO 1000. The H5 has a huge 3-inch LCD screen and the H2 has a smaller 2-inch screen.
The new Sony Cyber-shot H-series cameras are worthy successors to the ultra zoom H1. The original camera was a great concept but didn’t have the star power. The H5 just might have it. The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H5 has 7.2 megapixels, a huge LCD screen with great 230,000-pixel resolution and an optically image stabilized Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 12x zoom lens."

| Review: "Although the new 6.0-megapixel H2 shares the same ergonomic profile as the H1, the former feels more comfortable and assuring to wield than its predecessor. This is due largely to a lighter body that has been slimmed down to a very manageable 490g. However, even with the weight reduction, the H2 still packs the same potent 12x optical zoom as the H1 for zooming in on distant objects. Coupled with the Sony "Super SteadyShot" optical image stabilization, there will be less concern of unwanted blurring from zooming with an unsteady pair of hands.
While its optical zoom capability is undeniably powerful for its class, the H2 is also right at home in handling macro shots. Our tests revealed a short distance of just 1cm was all it needed for macro focusing. That being said, the US$400 Cybershot DSC-H2 is a fine camera that is ideal for most occasions, but for those who want more pixels to capture more details, there's always the higher end 7.20-megapixel Cybershot DSC-H5 that is due to retail at US$500 this coming May." |

| Review: "The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H2 bears a strong resemblance to the DSC-H1, but this new model has a number of modifications. The H2 has a 6-megapixel resolution and a stabilized 12X zoom.
The DSC-H2 is a logical evolution of the DSC-H1, refining the design, adding an extra million pixels to the resolution, and moving from a stabilized Sony lens to a stabilized Carl Zeiss lens. Aside from the relatively low resolution of the 2-inch LCD monitor, the H2 has few drawbacks. It offers a very good image quality, and is equipped with an excellent high resolution EVF that provides a sharp image for both composition and menus. All characteristics that should make it an ideal camera for those unwilling to carry an SLR system." |
