Pentax Optio W10 Review
|
Review Summary
Review: "Regular visitors to this site may recall my painful experience reviewing the Pentax Optio WPi waterproof compact back in February this year. My theory was that Pentax's PR department was trying to kill me by making me wade into freezing water in the middle of winter. At about the same time that I was dicing with death for that review, Pentax was launching the latest weapon in its arsenal of assassination. However this time they've miscalculated. They've sent me the new Optio W10 to review in spring, so hopefully this time I can retain the use of my extremities.
At lower ISO settings the pictures are smooth and sharp, and the improved folded-optics lens provides excellent edge-to-edge detail and almost no distortion even at the widest angle setting. The improved image processing engine is a lot less heavy-handed than that of many similarly-specified cameras, and produces extremely natural colour rendition that are naturally sharp rather than over-sharpened.
The W10 takes the unique abilities of the WP and WPi and improves on them. Better image quality, better movies, better handling and faster overall performance make it indisputably a better camera, while the lower launch price makes it even better value for money."

| Review: "If you're looking for a camera that needs to be able to take a light dunking, the 6 megapixel Pentax Optio W10 is an excellent choice. The W10 is the third generation of waterproof Optio camera and Pentax just keeps tweaking minor things to make improvements each time. If you spend a lot of time on the beach or near the water, the Pentax Optio W10 can withstand a drop in the sand and can get the underwater movie of your trout swimming away to be caught again another day.
The Pentax Optio W10 can withstand an accidental dunk in the water, a drop in the sand, or even some shallow snorkeling. Good image quality, good battery life, and easy operation make it a great performer, above water and below. This is a great camera for anyone who likes to spend time near water and take pictures." |

| Review: "Looking at the Pentax Optio W10, you would have no idea there is anything out of the ordinary about it - and that's a good thing. Though it has a Class 8 Waterproof rating (submersible for up to five feet for a maximum of 30 minutes of continuous use), the W10 resembles most other compact digital cameras on the market. While it's slightly thicker than competing non-waterproof models, the camera's overall dimensions make it just the right size for a travel camera - 4.2 x 2.2 x 0.9 inches (107 x 55 x 23mm).
After spending a day with the Pentax W10 at a lake in the Poconos, I grew enamored with this model and what it was capable of doing underwater without the weight of a cumbersome housing. Pictures I shot at the lake were some of my favorites of the summer, offering good color and sharpness in shots taken on dry land, while bobbing up and down on a raft, and below the surface. We're still waiting for a waterproof digital camera without so many compromises, but until that day comes, the Optio W10 is a good choice." |

| Review: "Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor sand, nor mud, nor dust will stop the 6-megapixel Pentax Optio W10. This postal-worker-worthy camera is specially sealed to prevent damage from the elements, completely submersible in water to a depth of 4.9 feet for up to 30 minutes, and impenetrable to dust particles as fine as talcum powder. Even if you don't plan on taking it into the drink or the desert, the Optio W10's design makes it virtually immune to the wet, nasty weather that could kill other cameras.
Its performance and image quality leave a lot to be desired, though, and you might want to look for another camera if you're not planning to go swimming with it." |

| Review: "The Pentax Optio W10 is a waterproof compact camera with a 3x zoom lens, 6-megapixel CCD and a list price of $299.95. Though waterproofing might seem like a gimmick ? how many pictures does anyone need of their kids underwater? - Waterproof cameras are, by definition, sealed against dust, dirt, and moisture. The W10 should be a durable camera, ready to be carried in pockets and taken out in the rain. It's also tough enough for even small children to use on their own.
The Optio W10's unique benefits are its waterproofing, its simplicity and its styling. Its image quality is by no means outstanding. Still, there will be plenty of people who want a convenient, moderately-priced beach camera or even a snorkeling camera, and they will be pleased with the W10. For under $300, the 6-megapixel, 3x optical zoom Optio W10 offers a unique feature set at its price point, although users will have accept the sacrifice in image quality for the added durability and underwater functionality." |

| Review: "Pentax's WP series of waterproofed cameras has received a boost with the fully waterproof W10; a 3x optical zoom compact boasting 6-megapixel resolution and a hat full of scene modes.
Image quality is good overall, with the lens only letting the side down at full zoom where I had some odd soft edges to my shots, or a strange halo effect on some highlights. General shots are fine and while noise is well controlled up to ISO 400." |
