Nikon Coolpix P3 Review
|
Review Summary
Review: "Wi-Fi is the word for the 8-megapixel Nikon Coolpix P3. Like its predecessors, the Coolpix P1 and the P2, as well as its compact contemporary, the Coolpix S6, this compact point-and-shoot incorporates an internal transmitter for uploading pictures to a nearby computer or printer. While it sounds exciting, Nikon's wireless implementation falls a little short of true usefulness. Indeed, it's the P3's excellent image quality that impresses us far more than its wireless abilities. With optical vibration reduction (VR), the P3 is a great snapshooter that should please discriminating users."

| Review: "The 8.1 megapixel Coolpix P3 has a very impressive 2.5 inch LCD and a 3.5x optical zoom. The image quality is top notch, as you would expect from a Nikon. The build quality of the camera is excellent and it has a great set of options for a wide range of users.
Nikon has managed to provide easy access to camera settings by using the mode dial to change ISO, white balance, etc. Keeping them on the mode dial prevents the camera from getting too "buttony" and losing the ease of use for people who want to have simple operation." |

| Review: "Aimed at photographers who want more control than is offered by many digital cameras, the Nikon Coolpix P3 offers a sensor resolution of eight megapixels, coupled to a 3.5x optical zoom lens with Nikon's Vibration Reduction - a useful addition that helps to steady shots in low light situations.
There's also a sizeable 2.5-inch LCD display on the Nikon P3, an aperture priority auto mode to help unleash your creative side, and continuous shooting at 1.8 frames per second.
...While it's easy enough for a beginner to capture great images, the real attraction of the Nikon Coolpix P3 is you can go a bit beyond its automatic control; creating rather than merely capturing images. Nikon's Feature System helps the novice use the Coolpix P3, but tools like Vibration Reduction and fast shot-to-shot options make more choices available to anyone who turns them on. And with Wireless G transfers and printing, the Nikon Coolpix P3 is convenient and fun, too...." |

| Review: "This is a review of the Nikon Coolpix P3, a compact, albeit somewhat hefty, 8.1 megapixel digital camera that packs considerable power and some notable features such as an active vibration reduction mode and 802.11b/g wireless communication. That is the same wireless LAN notebook computers have and it can make transferring and printing pictures a lot easier.
The Coolpix P3 is infinitely more powerful than my old swivel-body 900 was. It's also smaller, lighter and costs a lot less. However, it looks just like an ordinary camera now, a squat little box. No more elegant, complex swivel-body. Maybe that is because as digital cameras got ever smaller, it no longer made sense to use that somewhat complex design.
Overall, the Nikon Coolpix P3 is a competent compact that takes excellent pictures. It is an unobtrusive camera that is easy to use and like. It doesn't look fancy like some of today's ultra-slims or prior "swivel-body" Nikons. Instead, the P3 counts on Nikon quality and some interesting technology to impress." |

| Preview: "Nikon says the "p" in its P line of Coolpix models stands for Performance, and on specs alone the Nikon Coolpix P3 and P4 seem to come loaded with some pretty decent firepower. Both models offer a new 1/1.8-inch CCD chip with 8.1 megapixels of image resolution and introduce Vibration Reduction (VR) and optical image stabilization into its consumer-targeted Coolpix line. Nikon, like a lot of manufacturers these days, is clearly trying to find other ways to attract customers aside from rising megapixel counts.
There’s something definitely likeable about these two new Coolpix models. While the sleek, rounded metal construction definitely owes something to Canon’s latest top-of-the-line ELPH models, because these Coolpixes are cast from aluminum they feel lighter and more resistant to scratching. The 8 MPs in both cameras is impressive and features like VR are great ideas, but we’d like to fully put these models through their paces to see how effective the vibration reduction is in a variety of settings and circumstances. Also, while the P3features WiFi for an extra $50, the jury is still out on what the real practical applications this affords the user. Plus, it would be nice to see Nikon throw in their Wireless Print Adaptor for free." |

| Review: "The Nikon Coolpix P3 ($449) is a midrange digital camera offering an 8 Megapixel CCD, 3.5X optical zoom lens, optical image stabilization, an 2.5" LCD display, limited manual controls, and Wi-Fi functionality. The P3 shares the spotlight with its twin, the Coolpix P4, which is the same camera except that it's lacking the Wi-Fi feature. The P3's Wi-Fi system lets you transfer photos directly to your computer as soon as you take them. Through Nikon's optional Wireless Printer Adapter you can do the same for prints, as well.
The P3 is a compact (but not tiny) metal camera with a 3.5X optical zoom lens and a 2.5" LCD display. The camera is well put together for the most part, though the plastic door over the memory card and battery compartment is especially flimsy. While having a little extra zoom is nice, the big story here is Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) system, which reduces the effects of camera shake, allowing you to use slower shutter speeds than you could otherwise. As you saw earlier in the review, the VR system is effective for both still and movie recording. The camera's LCD is big, bright, and sharp - and visible in low light conditions. Nikon unfortunately left out an optical viewfinder on the P3." |

| Review: "Announced just before PMA in February 2006, the 8 megapixel Coolpix P3 replaces the P2 at the top of Nikon's compact Coolpix range, adding a few features (the headline change being the introduction of optical image stabilization) and sleeker, simpler styling. Like the P2 the P3 is one of the small, but growing, band of cameras with built-in wireless (802.11 b/g) Wi-Fi capabilities, and like most of Nikon's higher-end Coolpix models it is stuffed to the gills with features, options and controls.
On the positive side, in pure photo quality terms the P3 is up with the best, and may well be a good choice for the experienced photographer who likes to take a little more control at the shooting stage and - critically - likes a clean image for post-processing. Macro performance is excellent, the Vibration Reduction system useful, and the Wi-Fi capabilities (though limited) will have appeal to some users." |

| Review: "The Nikon Coolpix P3 slips into the Coolpix range above the P1 and P2 and alongside the otherwise identical P4, identical that is apart from the P4 lacks the WiFi connectivity found on the P3.
The IEEE 802.11g (and b) Wi-Fi set up is a neat addition to the camera and when properly set up (which can be a bit of a challenge, I found it less than straight forward) allows direct wireless printing via compatible printers and connecting the camera to a PC for offloading images directly to a hard disc without the need of a cable.
Overall, image quality is superb, some frame filling shots of colourful rugs are so detailed and sharp that even stray carpet fibers are clearly defined in the photos." |
