Nikon Coolpix S5 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 7.00 (out of 10)
Review: "The latest addition to Nikon's expanding range of digital compacts in the S-range is the Nikon Coolpix S5, an ultra slim 6-megapixel model with a strong metal body. It combines simplicity of operation with high-quality image performance and a multitude of scene exposure modes while using a new Pictmotion photo sharing technology for in-camera slide shows with smooth transitions and added music.

Despite some rather obvious shortcomings such as the tiny controls and reflective LCD screen coupled to the average lens quality, the Nikon S5 would still make a nice addition to the family's photographic gear as an elegant ladies' camera, to capture the kids at play or to record snapshots on holiday."

Review: "Nikon's latest addition to their stylish Coolpix S-series cameras sports an impressive 6 megapixel resolution in a camera not much more than a centimetre thick. In this review Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at whether the impressive styling compromises the excellent image quality and ease-of-use, for which Nikon Coolpix cameras have gained a reputation.

The Nikon Coolpix S5 is a quality feature-packed camera that will satisfy anyone looking for an ultra-compact digital camera to take pictures whilst out and about. The only disappointments are the limited ISO sensitivity range, and the amount of noise present at the maximum ISO400 setting."

Review: "Nikon's Coolpix S5 is a slim, attractive 6-megapixel shirt-pocket camera that hits all the right design notes. Its 2.5-inch LCD screen, satin silver finish, and internally zooming 3X optical lens (35mm-to-105mm equivalent) will be a hit with style-conscious snapshooters, and its scrolling click wheel gives users an easy, MP3 player-like interface. The quick-shooting camera boasts very good build quality, color rendition, and sharpness, but some minor image flaws may disappoint eagle-eyed photographers. A simple feature set and basic shooting options will serve casual snapshooters, but they probably won't satisfy enthusiasts who like to tinker with settings."

Review: "The "S" for style Nikon Coolpix S5 is a 6 megapixel digital camera with a large 2.5" LCD screen and a 3X optical zoom. It's a fashionably thin compact digital camera that is sort of reminiscent of the classy little Contax T film camera. The Contax T (introduced in 1984) was designed by F. A. Porsche and achieved cult status among serious photographers almost immediately.

The super svelte little S5 consistently delivers outstanding picture quality, above average performance, and puts the fun back into taking pictures. It is stylish, very well designed, user friendly, surprisingly versatile, and capable of dependably excellent results."

Review: "The venerable Coolpix line has gone through many iterations, and the new S5 is Nikon's latest spin on a very popular product line. Just 0.8-inch at its slimmest point, the S5 is designed to be slipped into your pocket and trotted out to a restaurant, bar, party, or other special event.

Though it might not lead the pack based on image quality alone, the Nikon Coolpix S5 has a lot going for it in a camera this small. For starters, the Nikon S5's svelte metallic chassis is one of the thinnest I've used, making it the perfect camera to slip into your pocket and forget about until you're ready to take pictures.

Review: "The 6.1-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S5 is the slim sister to the flagship S6. The cameras offer very similar feature sets, with the distinguishing feature being the S6's wireless functionality. The Nikon S5 has a Nikkor 3x optical zoom lens that stays within the innovatively-designed wavy camera body, a 2.5-inch LCD screen on the back, and a one-touch portrait button on the top that accesses all of Nikon's portraiture technology: face priority auto focus and red-eye fix in recording and lighting compensation in playback."

Overall, the S5's colors are disappointing because they just aren't very realistic. These test results came from the camera's Standard color mode, which is less noisy and more accurate than the Vivid color mode. The results are still unfortunate though..."

Review: "Launched in February this year, the Coolpix S5 is one of two new cameras in Nikon’s S range of ultra-slim pocket compacts. The S series itself is relatively recent, starting with the 5.0 megapixel S1 launched around this time last year. All the cameras in the series share the same basic layout, with a 3x optical zoom non-protruding lens mounted in the top right corner of the front panel, and only a bare minimum of external controls. The S5 has a 6.0 megapixel sensor, a high resolution 2.5" LCD monitor, and a strong metal body. It measures 93 x 59 x 20mm and weighs 165g including battery and card – it may be neither the slimmest nor the lightest camera on the market, but it is small and light enough to slip into a shirt pocket or purse without leaving much of a bulge.

Noise control was generally very good, producing very clean results at 50 ISO, but there was some colour distortion in darker areas visible from 100 ISO upwards. The worst offender though was the lens, which is usually a Nikon strongpoint. This time I found badly blurred corners at both ends of the zoom range, as well as severe barrel distortion at the wide-angle setting, something I’d associate with cheap cameras at the other end of the price range."
