Kodak EasyShare V570 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review: "The Kodak Easyshare V570 looks to all intents and purposes like any other compact digital camera, until you turn it on and notice that it has not one but two lenses. Its official title is Kodak Retina Dual Lens Technology, and it allows Kodak to offer both an ultra wide-angle lens of 23mm and a more standard zoom lens of 39mm-117mm in the same camera.

Image quality is only average, with noticeable noise and blurring at ISOs 200 and 400, which means that the V570 is best suited to situations with adequate lighting, especially if you want to make larger prints. The Kodak Easyshare V570 is just a simple point and shoot camera in terms of creativity, with no control over aperture or shutter speeds, but Kodak have gone to great lengths to make the V570 easy to use, with a wealth of playback and sharing options available."

Review: "If you've ever wondered why your landscape shots never seem to be able to reproduce the grandeur you felt on location, chances are because your digital camera could not capture the whole vista.

But now you can with the Kodak V570's ultra-wide angle 23mm. And if this is even not enough to capture the whole landscape, a unique in-camera panorama stitching requires only 3 pictures to cover a full 180° for wide breathtaking landscape vistas. Use 2 or 3 shots stitched together for real estate pictures.

The Kodak EasyShare V570 Dual Lens is a one-of-a-kind digital camera that gives well exposed, good to very good quality images straight out of the camera. Its ultra-wide angle lens should be a major selling point for many who desire or require that wide coverage. It is very easy to use and, paired with the optional Printer Dock Plus Series 3 printer, you have One-Touch facility in transferring images to your PC and printing 4x6 in. prints in the convenience of your home."

Review: "The Kodak EasyShare V570 is a compact 5.0-megapixel design that provides a wide spectrum of preset shooting modes, an easy-to-understand interface, and a handful of creative exposure options. Its big feature is its dual lens design which combines a 3x zoom with an impressive 23mm wide angle lens. Part of the Kodak "Pocket Series," the Kodak V570 is very compact, with low-profile controls that won't snag pockets.

The Kodak V570 presents an interesting problem for us. It's a camera with a lot in the plus column and a lot in the minus column; yet it still nets out as a positive experience. We really like the camera for its unique dual lens arrangement that includes a surprisingly useful 23mm wide angle lens, but its image quality really isn't as good as it could be for a 5 megapixel camera...."

"With a big entrance at the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show, Kodak announced the EasyShare V570 to head up its stylish V-line. The 5-megapixel digital camera is the first consumer-oriented digital camera with a dual lens system, which Kodak calls its Retina technology. This system incorporates a very wide 23 mm lens with a non-extending 39-117 mm zoom lens for a combined 5x optical zoom. The two lenses enable photographers to capture wide angles or to close in on a subject from far away – all with non-extending lenses.

The Kodak EasyShare V570 has some quirks: there is no USB port directly on the camera, so users have to transfer pictures with the included Kodak EasyShare Photo Frame Dock 2. The camera also has an inadequate multi-selector and a poorly positioned built-in flash. Nevertheless, the stylish V570 looks great and takes great pictures without much fuss."

"The typical ultracompact digital camera often has your back up against a wall when equipped with a wide angle that affords no better than the equivalent of a 35mm-to-39mm view. Eastman Kodak has a better idea: including a second, ultrawide 23mm (35mm-camera equivalent) fixed-focal-length lens that broadens your viewpoint when faced with tight spots or breathtaking panoramas.

Because its unique lens setup's versatility is the hallmark of the Kodak EasyShare V570, we'd hoped for better image quality. The 3X zoom lens offered about the same image quality you'd expect from a run-of-the-mill 5-megapixel camera, while the fixed-focal-length lens performed about the same, except with that impressive ultrawide view."

It is easy to see what makes new Kodak EasyShare V570 unique: The camera has two Schneider Kreuznach C-Variogon lenses. (It also has 5.0-megapixel CCDs to accompany each lens, but those are on the inside.) This is not some new-fangled specialty camera sporting binocular or 3D image capture but an ultracompact digital camera that gives you the benefit of both a wide-angle and a 5X zoom lens in one device. The combination is very compelling, but Kodak had to make some compromises to offer this photographic flexibility.

At this point, the V570 rates as a very good camera for an ultracompact. It's difficult to compare it directly with other cameras, because its dual-lens construction is unique among compact cameras. Nonetheless based on our testing, it just doesn't quite reach the status of an Editors' Choice.

Digital Camera Review 6.50 01-24-06 Read Full Review
"It seems that Kodak always manages to make at least one splash in the digital camera market in a year's time. Last time, it was the first WiFi enabled digital camera, this time, it's the first dual lens point and shoot camera - the Kodak EasyShare V570. With some nice retro styling, it's a definite eye-catcher. The dual lens set up provides one lens for an ultra-wide angle (equivalent to 23mm in a 35mm camera) and the other lens provides a 3x optical zoom from 39-117mm (35 mm equivalent).

... overall, the camera is a mixed bag. Its looks and dual lenses are certainly conversation starters. I like it as a compact, pocketable camera along with my bigger digital SLR. It doesn't produce the greatest images, but you will capture some memorable ones with the ultra-wide angle lens. Also, the Kodak EasyShare system (docks/printers), make it very easy to make prints directly from the camera."

"Kodak's latest camera doesn't promise a huge optical lens that is capable of zooming in on the action, but two SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH C-VARIOGON lenses. But are two lenses better than one? Pocket-lint was given exclusive access 1 month before the launch of the camera to have a look.

The V570 is a strange kettle of fish. On the one hand the addition of the second lens comes across as a gimmick that is nothing more than a headline grabber to get some interest in the Kodak brand, but on the other, the photographer in me says that the addition of the new lens is something that is too valuable to mock."

DigiCam Review ----- 04-11-06 Read Full Review
Review: "...the Kodak Easyshare V570 is a new ultra compact 5 megapixel digital camera with two lenses - an ultra wide angle lens (equiv. 23mm), and a normal 3x optical zoom lens. It features a 2.5" screen, and an ultra compact silver and black metal body. The camera has two 5 megapixel sensors, one per lens, wide angle lens is equiv. to 23mm, and the 3x optical zoom lens is equiv. to 39 - 117mm on a 35mm camera.

If you want a fun. easy to use, ultra compact digital camera with an ultra-wide angle lens, and intend to take mainly outdoor photos, then this camera may be a good choice. The camera offers generally quick performance, and extremely quick focusing and shutter response when using the ultra-wide angle lens. Image quality indoors was one of the camera's weaknesses, as the camera had problems focusing in low-light when using the zoom, red-eye regularly occured, and noise was quite high...."

Megapixel ----- 06-27-06 Read Full Review
Review: "The Kodak EasyShare V570 continues the design of other V-series cameras from Kodak, offering a thin and sharply rectangular metallic body with almost no protrusions. However, the V570 stands out from others in the series by having not one but two lenses, neither of which extends past the front of the camera.

The Kodak V570 yields its best images with well-lit outdoor subjects. The Multi-pattern metering is good at handling complex scenes, and usually produces well-balanced exposures. Similarly, the Auto white balance setting is trustworthy, and produces accurate colours under most outdoor light conditions ranging from direct sun to overcast.

If the V570 is not one of the fastest cameras around, its dual lenses clearly make it an interesting camera that offers a flexibility that is not common with ultra compact cameras. Regrettably, this potential is undermined to some extent by an overly strong compression, a sensitivity to noise, and an underpowered flash."
