Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W30 Review

Review: "Sony's pocket-size shooter, the Cyber Shot DSC-W30, provides impressive photos and fast, easy operation in a simple package. Digital neophytes may question its modest allotment of seven scene modes, but the available exposure modes do a good job of handling most situations. In fact, snapshooters will likely be pleased with the results they get from this camera. However, a limited 3X zoom lens and a paucity of manual controls limit the DSC-W30's enthusiast appeal to those looking for a small second camera.
We're very impressed with this camera's photos. They come out well exposed under a variety of lighting conditions, with lots of detail in the shadows and highlights. The DSC-W30 doesn't blow out whites as much as many other cameras in its class. It produces neutral but highly saturated hues, especially in the reds and the oranges. The most serious image problem was noise. While it's barely visible at ISO 80, you can start to see smearing from the noise reduction at ISO 200 and discolorations at ISO 400 and beyond. Most people will find the high-ISO noise annoying, but at least it is available for moments when you really need to forgo the flash."

| Review: "The Sony Cyber-hot DSC-W30 was introduced at the Photo Marketing Association Trade Show in February 2006. Marketed as an entry-level digital camera with its simplified modes and control systems, the W30 even has a function guide for users who are only now dipping their toes into digital photography.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W30 produced fairly accurate colors with a 6.58 mean color error in the Normal color mode. Saturation, at 99.9 percent, was almost perfect. For these results, the W30 received an overall color score of 7.61, better than that of previous W-series digital cameras." |

| Review: "Thin and ultra-compact, the new Sony DSC-W30 digital camera (and its cousins the W40 and W50 models) updates the Cyber-shot line with convenient portability and fully automatic exposure control in a compact, rugged metal case. The W30 offers the excellent resolution of a 6.0-megapixel CCD and 32 megabytes of internal memory, as well as a large 2.0-inch color LCD monitor and useful range of preset exposure modes.
If you're looking for a good "take anywhere" camera with great versatility and good color and tonality, the Sony DSC-W30 deserves a close look. (And if you'd like a the same camera with a larger 2.5-inch LCD, the Sony DSC-W50 is only about $30 more at retail.) We suggest that you ignore the ISO 800 and 1000 settings on the camera, as the image quality there is really marginal even for snapshot-size prints, but if you look at the Sony W30 as an ISO 400 camera, it competes very strongly, making it a Dave's Pick in its category." |
