Olympus Stylus 720 SW Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.81 (out of 10)
Review: "Announced on the 26th of January 06, the Olympus Mju 720SW "Shock and Waterproof" (aka Stylus 720SW) is a new 7 megapixel digital camera with a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen and an ultra compact metal body that is waterproof and shockproof! As far as I'm aware, this is the only shockproof digital camera ever released! The 3x optical zoom lens is equiv. 38-114mm on a 35mm camera.
The Olympus Stylus / Mju 720SW has a LOT going for it, and would be especially suited to someone who wants to take their camera with them everywhere they go, especially if they're prone to dropping things, getting things wet, getting things dusty. The shockproof and dustproof qualities, and the solid build of the digital camera is likely to make the digital camera last much longer than other digital cameras, this makes it excellent value for money compared to less solid digital cameras. Image quality was generally good, although slightly under-saturated for some people's tastes, and images were slightly soft..."

| Review: "The Olympus Stylus 720 SW (µ DIGITAL 720 SW in Europe) is part of a series of cameras that have been specially designed to be moisture- proof; and with the introduction of the Stylus 720 SW, actually waterproof.
The Stylus 720 SW is a camera for those with an adventurous spirit. Easily slipped into a pocket and carried anywhere without fear of damaging it, it can be used in all sorts of situations, in all types of weather, and in just about any place. Its 7.1-megapixel resolution allows photos to be printed out to a 10 x 8 size (26 x 19.5 cm) at 300 dpi, yielding excellent results. Moreover, its fully automatic modes are reliable, making it possible to leave the camera in charge of all photographic decisions, practical when wandering around." |

| Review: "The Olympus 720SW takes the Stylus series to the next level of "all-weather" designs. While the Stylus line of digital cameras is known for its practicality in inclement weather, the new 720SW can stand up to a wide variety of rough situations. The 7.1-megapixel Olympus Stylus 720SW can be immersed in up to 10 feet of water and can survive a fall from 5 feet. Shockproof and waterproof, it's designed to be ready for anything and, with its 0.8 inch thick body, is sized to go anywhere.
The Olympus 720SW is fantastically rugged and can take a few beatings, but, in the end, doesn't produce shots which merit its $399 retail price. We hope to see Olympus continue to develop this body design, with modifications made to improve imaging capabilities on future models." |

| Review: "As with the rest of the Stylus line, the Olympus 720 SW design is based around a weatherproof body that ensures wherever you go, your camera will go right along with you, unhindered by rain, sleet, or snow that would see most digicams left at home or in a sealed case, unable to get that chance-of-a-lifetime photo. The "SW" in the model name hints at two more unusual features though: the 720 SW is shock-proof to the MIL-STD-810F standard (which means it can withstand a drop from 5 feet), and it's waterproof to a depth of three meters.
I'm disappointed that I have to make excuses for the Olympus Stylus 720 SW. I'd like to say the images are as stunning as the camera. But this is a case where the camera is an excellent hardware design with somewhat mediocre image quality. But our printer tests show clearly that what I see onscreen doesn't really make a huge difference in printed output." |

| Review: "The most weatherproof Stylus to date, the Olympus Stylus 720 SW is a waterproof, 7.1-megapixel camera that's fully submersible up to 10 feet, for an hour at a time. This ultracompact Stylus also happens to be shockproof (putting the S in SW), rated to withstand a drop of five feet. Sleek, responsive, and outfitted with image stabilization, the Stylus 720 SW makes a rugged and welcome travel companion.
The Olympus Stylus 720 SW's combination of resolution and waterproof durability are, to date, unparalleled for a camera of this size and class. For adventurous types, those benefits will probably outweigh issues with usability and middling indoor image quality." |

| Review: "The new Olympus Stylus 720 SW is built like a tank with space-age water/dust seals (it's waterproof to 10 feet/3 meters) and ultra sturdy (shockproof in a 5 foot/1.5 meter drop) exterior/interior construction.
The Olympus Stylus 720 SW was designed to withstand total immersion in water, extended exposure to mist, rain, snow, sleet, rain forest style humidity, dust, and ocean spray, plus the hard knocks and occasional slips and falls associated with active lifestyles. It is small enough to drop in a shirt pocket, tough as nails, easy to use, and retains all the style of its classic Stylus film camera ancestors. I didn't take the camera underwater, but I did take it out in the rain a couple of times with no ill effects." |

| Review: "When Pentax dove into the underwater point-and-shoot camera market last year with its nifty, but limited, Pentax OptioWP, I learned how much fun you could have taking underwater photos and videos. The ultracompact Olympus Stylus 720 SW builds on this notion and makes some important improvements. For example, the Stylus 720 SW is shock-resistant as well as being waterproof to a depth of 10 feet. (The Optio WP isn't shockproof at all and is waterproof only down to about 5 feet.) Those improvements make this the perfect camera for the backyard pool or even a trip to the beach." |

| Review: "Whatever your sports or preferred activities, the Olympus Stylus 720 SW is built as tough as it gets and delivers great results. Take it to the beach, boating, hiking, skiing, traveling - wherever your adventurous spirit takes you - without undue concern about bumps, knocks, rain, mud, sand or dust! The body is shock proof, can withstand a 5 foot fall, is weather and waterproof to a depth of 3m (10 ft) for up to 1 hour.
The Olympus Stylus 720 SW is well designed and well-built, and the "SW" designation means that you do not have to worry about damaging it either from a fall or from the elements. More importantly, it gives great results and should find a home in the pocket of anyone who requires a camera "tough enough to take anywhere." |
