Canon Powershot SD450 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.00 (out of 10)
Review: "Canon Digital IXUS 55 is an ultra-compact 5 megapixel digital camera with a stylish and durable stainless steel body. It offers a 3x optical zoom lens which is equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera. The IXUS 55 (also known as the Powershot SD450) is Canon's smallest ever 3x zoom camera, but Canon have still managed to include a large 2.5 inch LCD screen and even an optical viewfinder.

The Canon Digital IXUS 55 is a a good-looking and incredibly well-made point-and-shoot digital camera that thankfully doesn't sacrifice substance for style. The IXUS 55 is a tiny camera that both looks great and works well, with a number of innovative features on offer. On paper it doesn't seem to offer anything different to a lot of other, cheaper cameras - 3x optical zoom lens, 7 megapixel sensor, large 2.5 inch LCD screen - but pick the IXUS 55 up and there is an undeniable sense of quality which far exceeds the competition."

"If you're looking for a tiny digital camera to take along with you wherever you go, then the Canon PowerShot SD450 is an excellent choice. It has 5 megapixels, 3x zoom, and a large 2.5" LCD screen - a group of features that hits the "sweet spot" of today's tiny digital cameras. The Canon PowerShot SD450 is very well built, easy-to-use, and takes excellent photos. The only thing I really missed was a protective covering for the camera, which you can easily find on your own. At about $300, the Canon PowerShot SD450 is an excellent investment that should provide you with thousands upon thousands of precious memories. "

With the PowerShot SD550 and SD450 Digital ELPH, Canon has once again stood its stylish ELPH digital cameras on end, packing even more features into the stylish compacts. The 7.12-megapixel SD550 and 5.0-megapixel SD450 have the same shell and specs as their SD500 and SD400 predecessors (which continue to be available), but offer more options. Canon has retained their acclaimed optical viewfinder but matched it with a large 2.5-inch LCD monitor, redesigning the user interface to take advantage of the new screen.

Widely available as of this writing for under $300, the Canon PowerShot SD450 is an excellent little pocket camera, with a full feature set, super build quality, great image quality, and the flexibility to bring back good-looking pictures from a wide range of shooting situations. Its tiny case is sleek and sophisticated, and travels easily, although we do recommend a small hard case for it, to avoid damage if you bump against something with the camera in your pocket.

"As with the 7.2-megapixel PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph, our current Editors' Choice in the high-end ultracompact category, there's a lot to like about the 5MP PowerShot SD450 Digital Elph ($399.95 list). In fact, both have many of the same features. Yet there comes a point when a camera is a tad too tiny, and the SD450 may have reached it. For those with larger hands, the buttons and dials may be too little to use comfortably.

We wish there were some manual controls and a better menu interface to make it more user-friendly. But if image quality is what you're after, the Canon PowerShot SD450 is one of the best 5MP ultracompacts on the market."

The Canon IXUS 55 (Powershot SD450 in U.S.) is an ultra compact digital camera. This type of model is often described as pocket sized as it is small enough to fit into just about any pocket you have. This is a five megapixel digital camera with a three times optical zoom lens. The IXUS 55 is aimed at anyone who is looking for a camera with a good build quality, is fairly easy to use and offers the convenience of being able to take it anywhere. It is likely to appeal more to someone who enjoys taking photos for fun rather than to a more serious photographer.

"In an ideal world buying an ultra compact camera would not involve any compromise at all. But this ain't a perfect world, and if you want a camera you really can carry with you anytime, anywhere then you have to accept there will be some trade-off in terms of absolute image quality. The SD450, like the SD400 before it, is a fast, easy to use, well-specified camera that can genuinely claim to be pocket-sized, and it produces images that - whilst by no means perfect - are sharp, clean and colorful, and it does so with the minimum fuss. It's so small, and is so enjoyable to handle and use that you cannot help but take it with you wherever you go, something you might hesitate to do with a larger camera."

The differences between the SD450 and the SD400 that came before it are very minor, the most notable being an increase in LCD size, from 2 inches to 2.5 inches. The new model offers the same strong performance, unrelenting burst capabilities, and great battery life. If you're looking for an ultracompact snapshot camera and don't need manual controls, lots of scene modes, or a powerful electronic flash, this model may lure you into the Canon fold.
