Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 Review

Review Summary
Review: "The Sony Cybershot DSC–N1 is an 8.1 megapixel compact digital camera with a Zeiss 3X zoom lens (38–114mm film equivalent). Construction is metal and quality of design and construction is high.

The Sony DSC–N1 will have strong appeal to the gadgetphile, but the serious photographer should compare it carefully with Sony’s excellent DSCW7, a 7.2mp camera with a good optical viewfinder and costing $250 less. The DSCW7 doesn’t let you put snowflake stamps in ten colours on your photos, but if you cherish your images you won’t miss that dubious boon."

Review: "With the introduction of the DSC-N1 and of its large touch screen, Sony may well be pointing us to the future. Not only is the screen easier on the eyes because of its size, the navigation of the menus, and all operations that have to be performed on the camera become fast, either using fingers or the stylus.

The N1 has no noticeable shutter lag, and autofocuses quickly. With most subjects the Multi AF system is able to find the focus point, or points, accurately. On occasion, however, one of the alternative focus options is preferable. The Centre AF, for instance, is always able to focus on what is at the centre of the frame.

The Sony DSC-N1 is a ground-breaking camera, and this is primarily due to its intuitive and easy-to-use touch screen. But beyond this, the DSC-N1 offers an excellent image quality and adds features, such as the slide show functions, that take full advantage of the medium."

Although it's a bit thicker than other ultra-compact cameras, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 takes advantage of that extra room by packing an ultra large LCD display, more powerful flash, and superb battery life into its metal body. Throw in limited manual controls, a nice movie mode, and great picture quality and the DSC-N1 is easy to recommend.

Camera performance was very good in most areas. The N1 starts up in about 1.6 seconds, it focuses quickly, and shutter lag was not noticeable. The camera cycles between shots quickly, and playback speeds were snappy as well. Battery life was well above average for a camera in this class. The only weak spot in terms of performance is the N1's continuous shooting mode, which was on the slow side, with the LCD blacking out between shots.

Sony's 8-megapixel compact camera stands out from the rest. It's ideal for shooting and sharing. The 3x optical zoom Carl Zeiss lens creates sharp images. The huge 3" touch-screen LCD monitor is slightly recessed to help avoid scratches. At first I wasn't too sure of a touch-screen on a small camera, but after some use it's great. You can navigate much quicker, the buttons on the touch-screen are large enough that you rarely miss them. The screen can be made larger due to the fact that you don't have all these other buttons on the back of the camera fighting for real estate. Sony's Clear Photo LCD Plus design offers extremely vivid colors and a wide viewing angle - perfect for sharing images with family and friends.

Either you'll love the idea of a touch-screen LCD or you'll find the necessity of constantly visiting the menu system totally frustrating, if not absurd; it's enough to make anyone's relationship with the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-N1 a love/hate proposition. Snapshooters frustrated with the assortment of buttons and dials on other digital cameras may find the N1's touch screen easier to use; those accustomed to changing settings via dedicated buttons or a four-way controller may reject the whole idea. At its heart, the DSC-N1 remains a basic 8-megapixel, 3X-zoom ultracompact camera for everyday photography. It has an assortment of shooting options that will meet the needs of snapshooters, and it boasts a 3-inch LCD for displaying the 500 or so photos you can store in onboard albums.

"With its signature slick, stylish design and a large, 3-inch touch screen, Sony's latest Cyber-shot DSC-N1 looks very cool, but it has a lot more than good looks going for it. This 8.1-megapixel ultracompact doesn't unseat the current ultracompact Editors' Choice, the Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph, but it has a lot of great features that make it an appealing choice for style- and performance-conscious shutterbugs.

The DSC-N1's resolution averaged 1,750 lines, which is on the low end of the range for an 8.1MP camera. It has a very quick boot-up time at 2.2 seconds. The 1.8-second recycle time was excellent, and there was just a hint of shutter lag. When testing for lens distortion, we saw no pincushion distortion, but we did see some loss of image quality and sharpness near the corners of the image at the wide-angle end of the zoom."
