Canon Powershot SD30 Review
|
Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.00 (out of 10)
"The IXUS i Zoom (Powershot SD30 in the U.S.) provides an almost perfect looking package for the point’n’shoot snapper, with easy to use controls and menu systems combined with enough specification to offer a modicum of control or fully automated settings for straight out of the box use.
The IXUS i Zoom is a stunning-looking, petit package that can create high resolution snaps to be proud of. There’s only a modicum of manual control making this less suitable for the more enthusiast user and its RRP is tad pricey, though you’ll be sure to pay less online or the High Street. But, it’s a gem, slightly flawed yes, but a gem none the less."

| "Small, sleek and stylish, the Canon PowerShot SD30 Digital Elph ($399.95 list) comes in four bold colors-gold, red, purple, and black. It's easy to slip into a shirt pocket or handbag. But the slick packaging doesn't quite make up for this ultracompact's mediocre performance. It's not the cheapest ultracompact on the market, and on our tests, we found it to be just an average camera in slick clothing.
At 3.3 seconds, the SD30's boot-up time was just average. Its 4.6-second recycle time was slow, and we found noticeable shutter lag. The lens itself had just the usual amount of barrel distortion and no pincushion distortion. Resolution measured 1,350 lines, about average for a 5MP camera." |

| If you want a camera that you can carry around for everyday outdoor shots, then I can recommend the PowerShot SD30. If you're looking for something small that performs when you need to use the flash, you'll likely be disappointed with the SD30. While it's hard to avoid the redeye problem on any camera in this class, you can find cameras with stronger flashes out there. |

| Canon's ELPH line of digital cameras have consistently offered good image quality, user-friendly design, and excellent build quality, and the new Canon PowerShot SD30 is no exception. An upgrade to last year's SD20 model, the SD30 adds a zoom lens (a particularly welcome addition), and makes noticeable strides in shooting performance, with a faster shutter response, and significantly better shot to shot cycle times. When it comes to picture taking, while actual exposure control remains automatic, the ability to adjust ISO, White Balance, and access longer shutter times significantly increases the camera's shooting range. Thanks to its high-speed DIGIC-II processing chip, it's also surprisingly responsive for a subcompact digital camera. The wireless remote is a big plus if you like to display slide shows on your TV set, too. All in all, an excellent camera, an easy choice as a Dave's Pick. |

| Canon once again added an excellent digital camera to the rich Digital IXUS range of cameras. The Canon Digital IXUS i Zoom (Powershot SD30 in theh U.S.) is not perfect but the target group will certainly appreciate this camera. It has its limits but on the other side; it offers a heck of a lot too. The scales definitely turn to a positive appraisal. As a point-and-shoot camera the IXUS i Zoom is a resounding success. It's not a versatile digital camera but Canon doesn't pretend that either. A beautiful design combined with excellent user friendliness has to guarantee success. A recommendable camera for the user that is looking for a trendy design, fine photo quality and user friendliness!

| The Canon PowerShot SD30 (IXUS i Zoom in Europe) is yet another of those cameras that are as much jewellery and fashion statement, as camera. Completely metal-clad, the SD30, whatever its colour, is accented by large sections of highly polished metal that include the lens trim and the wrist strap mount. The SD30 is very compact, measuring (L×H×D) 96.1×45.1×23.9mm (3.78×1.78×0.94 in.), but still incorporates a 1.8 inch LCD monitor which also serves as viewfinder. |

The camera’s DIGIC II processing works well in terms of processing prowess, particularly in backlit situations without flash where shadow detail is well captured, although highlights can suffer. Skin tones and portraits are particularly well handled. Image noise is apparent in most shots in shadows but the overall noise pattern is not intrusive." |
