Epson Perfection V700 Photo Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.05 (out of 10)
"It seems like this is becoming an annual event, a year ago I reviewed the Epson 4990 scanner, the year before it was the 4870. Both scanners produced high quality scans that were close, if not better than most dedicated film scanners. Most photographers are now shooting digitally, so film scanning is not a high priority. Having said that, there are many photographers who still want to convert their slide and film collections into digital files. High end film scanners are now rare items so flatbed scanners would seem to be the most logical and affordable choice."

Review (Summary): "We've been working with an Epson V700 in the bunker since July of last year, thanks to a quite generous loan from the company. Its distinctive dark gray and silver squared-off design takes up a corner of our large equipment table, connected to our main systems via a USB 2.0 port, the recommended configuration. ...

Our experience with the Epson Perfection V700 has been a happy one. It's fast. But it also delivers one of the highest quality captures we've seen in a flatbed. Sharp with good color. ...

As we said a few thousand words ago, it handled everything we threw at it. Which defines state of the art and explains why we've had no problem recommending it to anyone who has asked what's the best scanner to buy."

Review: "The new scanner has a 6-line CCD sensor with micro lenses utilising a dual resolution system using two scanning lenses. There's a Super Resolution lens, 6400 x 9600-pixel mode for film scanning and a High Resolution lens for 4800 x 9600-pixel scanning for reflective originals and media.

Colour, detail, sharpness and just about any criteria you want to measure is superb. A couple of demerits are the way the colour restoration software seems to apply a massive amount of correction by default, so tweaking is almost always required and the Digital ICE while excellent is darn slow. But overall, scan quality can be summed up as? stunning."
