Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.50 (out of 10)
"Modeled in the same sleek style as preceding Sony Cyber-shot T-series models, the DSC-T9 is ultra thin and compact, like a small makeup case. The camera's thin profile is chic and attractive, with smooth panels and very few protrusions. A horizontal sliding lens cover is a unique twist on the typical lens cover design, and doubles as a finger rest when open.

Arguably the best model yet in Sony's diminutive Cyber-shot "T" series, the Cybershot T9 delivers good picture quality and a great feature set in a rugged, super-compact all-metal body. The 6.0-megapixel CCD is an nice feature in a camera this small, and the large LCD monitor is quite impressive as well."

Review: "The Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T9, the latest in Sony's T-series of shirt-pocket-size digital cameras, is a great tool whether you're a casual shooter or a more serious photographer. Snapshooters will appreciate the camera's ease of use, and discerning photographers will appreciate the 6-megapixel model's above-average image quality and responsive performance. And while a not-so-wide lens and poor red-eye behavior will mar some indoor portraits, any user will love the camera's 2.5-inch LCD screen, its thin and attractive body, and its image stabilization for keeping low-light pictures sharp. The deal is sweetened by 58MB of internal memory.

It took Sony a few generations to get the T series right, but it looks like the company finally has gotten the idea. Though the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T9 is far from perfect, it's darn good for an ultracompact snapshot camera."

"The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9 is a very good ultra-thin camera, though it has its share of flaws. Despite the T9's negatives (which I'll cover below), the camera earns my recommendation thanks to its image stabilizer, snappy performance, and good photo quality.

. . . .The most notable feature on the DSC-T9 is its optical image stabilizer. The T9 is one of only a small handful of ultra-compacts with image stabilizers (the others being from Panasonic and Konica Minolta), and it sure comes in handy when you're taking shots in not-so-great lighting. While it won't work miracles (like stopping motion blur), it will allow you to use slower shutter speeds than you could otherwise. The stabilizer can be used in movie mode, as well."

"Although some in the fashion world have claimed that the super-waif is no longer the catwalk ideal, thin is still in when it comes to digital cameras. That's why the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9 ultracompact is sure to attract attention. It's super-thin, sleek, and sexy and features Sony's signature combo of elegant design and functional features. For example, you almost always know, in an intuitive way, which buttons are which on Sony's digital cameras. The only area Sony still needs improvement on is in its menu structure and content."

"The Sony Cybershot DSC-T9 is Sony's latest entry into its ultracompact T Series (DSC-T1, DSC-T5, DSC-T9), all credit card sized cameras with Carl Zeiss optics and sliding lens covers. The immediate predecessor to the T9 is the T7, a model that got less than stellar reviews due to user complaints of a slow lens and weak flash, allegedly making the camera all but useless in low-light environments. With the T-9, Sony has attempted to address these issues and is actively marketing this camera as a camera suited to low-light environments, due to higher ISO sensitivity (up to 640 ISO equivalent) and Sony's antishake system, Super SteadyShot.

I don't know whether Sony has fixed all of the problems users were reporting with the T7, but I found the T9 to be a mixed bag. With good lighting, this camera takes very pleasing photos that are nice and sharp and well-exposed. The camera is small and light enough to fit in a shirt pocket, and is very portable and fun. In tricky lighting situations, however, the camera's faults really start to interfere with usefulness of the camera."
