"Two competing technologies neatly divide the world of dedicated photo printers: thermal dye, which tends to provide greater portability, and ink jet, which usually offers a lower cost per print. Canon is one of the few manufacturers that will happily sell you printers of either kind. The Canon Selphy DS810 ($149.99 direct), which can print photos at up to 4 by 8 inches, is the latest choice on the ink jet side, and one of the best for the price."

| The Canon Selphy DS810 is one mobile photo printer that you'll probably want to leave at home, despite its estimated 29-cents-per-print economy. The Selphy's three-color output, 9-by-9-by-4-inch, 4.2-pound design, and lack of battery support don't stack up well against those of smaller, lighter transportable printers in this price range. Print quality was especially disappointing; our test output frequently looked flat, and the composite blacks (produced by combining cyan, magenta, and yellow; there is no black ink tank) were more of a dark, muddy green.

| There are people who want control of the way their photos print and people who don't. Compact photo printers like the Canon Selphy DS810 (Best Current Price: $99.99) are aimed at people who would rather push a button on the go and get great prints instantly. While printing with Canon's Selphy DS810 can be that simple, you need to print from your computer to get prints that look as good as the competition's.
The Canon Selphy DS810 had trouble overcoming its limited three-color ink palette. Prints looked better when we printed from the computer, but that's not how most people will want to use this product. If you're looking for a compact photo ink-jet printer to take with you, the Epson PictureMate Deluxe Photo Viewer Edition or the Hewlett-Packard Photosmart 385 GoGo will serve you better. |

| "We expected so much more from the Selphy and too be honest were very disappointed by the styling and the results. The DS810’s footprint and further printing space requirements means its not that compact either. Even worse, the print quality unfortunately doesn’t make up for the design." |
