Olympus EVOLT E-500 Digital SLR Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 8.14 (out of 10)
"As the third model in their Four-Thirds system Olympus have released the Evolt E-500, an entry level DSLR designed to be used by photographers of all skill levels. Apart from a large 2.5" LCD screen and an 8-megapixel sensor, its special features include dual card slots for XD and CF cards; digital black and white filters and even more shooting and metering options than before.

What we liked about the Olympus E-500 is the fact that, for the price of an entry level camera, you get a very advanced machine. The E-500 has so many features that it will take the real enthusiast some time to figure them all out, whereas relative beginners can simply leave the camera in Auto and get great results every time. We believe that this camera might well put Olympus back in the top three of camera manufacturers where they belong."

"Unlike other Olympus digital SLR cameras to date, the Olympus E-500 has a much more traditional design than the last dSLR Olympus introduced, the E300. Another in a series of Four Thirds system cameras, the E-500 uses a CCD with 4:3 proportions and a lens mount optimized for that ratio.

With the E-500, noise appears more tamed than with previous Olympus dSLR cameras, and is significantly lower than on a compact digital camera using a smaller sensor. For example, photos shot in daylight at 800 ISO show a level of noise that is comparable to images captured with a compact camera at 200 ISO. And at 1600 ISO, the E-500's upper sensitivity limit, noise is comparable to the 400 ISO level of many current compact cameras with a similar resolution."

Review: "Olympus gave four features top priority when developing the E-500, maximum image quality, a sensor cleaning system that ousts dust from the CCD without the need to tinker under the bonnet (or taking the camera back to get it serviced), ease of use and a compact design.

The E-500 is so packed with kit there's not room to go over it all here, suffice to say this is as comprehensively specified D-SLR as you're likely to want (or need). At £600 for the standard kit that includes the 14-45mm lens used in the test, it's great value and with independent lens makers such as Sigma backing the FourThirds standard, it looks set to grow and grow. In short, if you’re looking for a compact, lightweight D-SLR that packs a punch in almost all departments, then you would do far worse than stopping your search right here."

With so many digital camera manufacturers offering inexpensive digital SLRs, consumers have a lot of options to choose from. The overall quality is generally very high, but careful testing can detect subtle differences. Although our tests turned up some small issues with image quality and performance, we found the 8-megapixel Olympus Evolt E-500 to be a very good camera, but one that still falls shy of unseating our present entry-level D-SLR Editors' Choice, the Nikon D50.

"This is an impressive digital SLR camera, offering excellent image quality, an excellent range of lenses with very precise manual zoom control. The screen is good, and the camera can produce excellent photos - although be aware that in low light situations, you have to sacrifice one of either shutter speed, or iso (and therefore greater noise), or reduce resolution. If you can stick with the lower ISO settings and you want high quality large images then this camera should be high on your shopping list."

"...the EVOLT E-500 improves on its predecessor, offering the same eight-megapixel CCD, but expanding its exposure options to include more advanced bracketing and metering modes, a larger 2.5-inch LCD monitor, the ability to accept xD-Picture Cards, and a longer maximum exposure time. Many functions and features are the same as on the E-1 and E-300, including the unique "Supersonic Wave" filter that literally shakes dust off of the sensor's front filter, addressing a common problem with digital SLRs and the wide range of automatic and manual exposure modes. The new E-500 also comes in a dual lens kit package, featuring the ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-45mm and 40-150mm lenses. Read on for a full description of the Olympus E-500's features, operating modes, and a detailed analysis of its performance."

This is a technical, in-depth review of, and a commentary on, the E-500 digital camera by Olympus. It is based on my experience with a final, retail version bought at my own expense. This is a long article, as I'm trying to leave no stones unturned, also providing a commentary on what some specs or features really mean. If you are looking just for a "star rating", look elsewhere.

When the E-500 was announced in September this year the reception was noticeably more positive than for the E-300. The E-300's primary problems were its unusual design/layout and (as soon as reviews arrived) pretty average high ISO performance. It had five months as the highest pixel count 'affordable' digital SLR, until Canon announced the EOS 350D (Digital Rebel XT). So here we are about eight months later with the camera we'd always wanted Olympus to produce, a quality compact affordable digital SLR with an Four Thirds system lens mount. I'll re-iterate the point from my E-300 review, this is the kind of camera Olympus should have used to launch the Four Thirds system.

"Judging from both the size and price of the camera, the Olympus E-500 is meant for those who are new to the world of photography or are making the change from a compact camera to a D-SLR. The sheer amount of possibilities and settings offered on the Olympus E500 however, clearly imply a camera for the more advanced photographer. This makes the Olympus E-500 a camera one can grow in to. It offers a great first step in to the FourThirds system, which will become even more comprehensive over time. We've had the opportunity to test the Olympus E-500 and the standard 14-45 mm extensively. Our results can be read in the following Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera review.

Overall, I can only conclude that with the E-500 Olympus has introduced a very strong product. For its price-range, it offers the user a remarkable amount of options: plenty of special functions, fantastic image quality and an ergonomically very well thought out design. Naturally, it has a few minor flaws but in my opinion it is one of the best cameras, if not the very best, in its class. Truly recommended!"

The Olympus EVOLT E-500 offers many improvements over its predecessor (the E-300) with photo quality and design being the most notable. One thing hasn't changed though, and that's the fact that the E-500 is an excellent value. Priced at just $699 (body only), $799 (one lens kit), and $899 (two lens kit), you get a lot of camera for very little money, which is why the E-500 gets my recommendation.

Overall there's much to like about the E-500. While it's not the best digital SLR in its class, it may be the best value. It offers a lot of features, good performance and photo quality, and a nicely designed body that costs less than you'd expect. If you're moving up to a digital SLR and don't currently own any lenses, the E-500 should be on your shopping list. Even if you already have a couple of lenses from Canon/Minolta/Nikon/Pentax it's still worth a look.

Review: "The E-500 employs an 8Mp CCD (charge-coupled device) sensor that delivers 4:3 aspect ratio images with a maximum of 3,264x2,448 pixels – enough to make good-looking A3 inkjet prints. The lens mount will take any FourThirds-compatible lens, which includes no fewer than 15 Olympus Zuiko Digital models. The focal length of all lenses is in effect multiplied by two, so the optionally bundled 14-45mm has a range equivalent to 28-90mm on a 35mm camera.

The Olympus E-500 has 8Mp quality, matching the best budget digital SLRs and a unique approach to combating dust on the sensor. Some may not like the motorised manual focusing, but few will complain about a body and two lenses for £675. It's great value."

Review: "The E-500 is a very handsome piece of kit, with a solid and businesslike appearance. It is almost exactly the same size as the market-leading Canon EOS 350D, but thanks to its plastic body it is around 60g lighter. Despite its comparatively small dimensions the control layout is sensible and uncluttered, while still leaving room for a big high resolution 2.5in LCD monitor and a large comfortable handgrip. It has to be said that the plastic body also means that it doesn’t feel as solid and well made as some of its competitors. In fact I would go as far as to say that in places the finish feels decidedly flimsy.

The E-500 should secure Olympus a place on the lucrative consumer D-SLR shelf alongside the Nikon D50, Canon EOS 350D and Pentax *ist DL. It is a very well designed camera, combining excellent picture quality, outstanding performance and lots of creative versatility, while still maintaining beginner-friendly simplicity and easy handling. It is a genuine pleasure to use, and produces superb results."

"Unlike the previous E-300 and the latest E-330 models though, the E-500 is a conventionally-styled digital SLR with a control layout which closely resembles Canon's EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT. Indeed, sporting the same resolution and roughly the same dimensions, this is clearly the model Olympus sees as its closest rival.

But it must be said the overall image quality is very good, the affordable twin lens bundle will cover most eventualities, while that short delay at startup ensures you'll rarely if ever worry about dust - and that's something the 350D / Rebel XT and its rivals can only dream of. That said, anyone seriously considering the E-500 should also compare it with Panasonic's long-awaited Digital SLR, due to be announced at the PMA show at the end of February 2006."

Review: "An upgrade over the EVOLT E-300 released a year earlier, the E-500 features more traditional SLR styling, a few technical enhancements, and several new amenities. The external differences are obvious at even a quick glance. Instead of the long and flat body, the E-500 features a typical penta-prism hump, more logical control layout, and a larger LCD monitor. A more versatile and reliable 8-megapixel camera, the E-500 is just as affordable. It retains all of its predecessor's features, including the Four-Thirds format (17.3x13mm) Kodak CCD and the unique "Supersonic Wave" filter that removes dust with vibration.

The Olympus EVOLT E-500 is a leading contender in versatility in the "affordable" category. Aside from 8-megapixel resolution, this digital SLR boasts many operating modes plus a vast range of advanced options for controlling exposure, white balance, color space, and other image parameters. "

"A well-designed compact 8-megapixel digital SLR camera, the Olympus Evolt E-500 offers a notably broad set of features for its class, including Olympus's signature dust-reduction system. Every time you turn on the E-500, its supersonic wave filter vibrates 35,000 times per second to shimmy dust off the CCD. With more fine-tuning tools than you might expect for the price, not to mention compatibility with Olympus's sharp Zuiko Digital lenses, this affordable model offers an appealing alternative to competitors such as the Nikon D50, the Canon EOS Rebel XT, and the Pentax *ist DL."
