Ricoh Caplio R3 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 9.00 (out of 10)
"The Ricoh Caplio R3 is a stylish digital camera with a 7.1x wide-angle optical zoom lens packed into a very compact metal body. The 5 megapixel camera features a 2.5" screen and built in vibration correction - this helps produce blur free photos in low light or at full zoom. The camera is very good feature wise, with quick access to options and speedy performance, however the camera is let down by average image quality - as the images produced have high noise, are generally soft, and have higher than average purple fringing. If having a lot of zoom power in a very compact camera is a priority then this is definitely worth considering, but if image quality is a top priority then this camera is best avoided. Ricoh are to be commended for innovation in providing such a large amount of zoom with image stabilsation in such a small and speedy camera, and for that reason I'm giving this camera an above average rating."

"Ricoh can always be relied upon to offer something a little different. The Ricoh Caplio R3 is a very compact 5 megapixel digital camera with a massive 7x optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 28-200mm. Most cameras of this size offer a 3x or at best a 4x optical zoom. Ricoh have gone for broke by cramming a 7x zoom lens into a body that is only 26mm thick, thanks to what the Japanese company calls a "Double Retracting LENS System".

The Ricoh Caplio R3 promises an awful lot on paper. A camera that can easily fit in your pocket, yet has a massive 7x wide-angle optical zoom lens. A camera that has a potentially winning combination of an anti-shake system and an extensive ISO range of 64-800. A camera that is easy-to-use, well-built and stylish in an understated kind of way. And a camera that that offers all this for less than £250. The The Ricoh Caplio R3 delivers on all of these promises, except the most important one of all - image quality."

The Ricoh Caplio R3 is an attractively designed and well made camera with a highly unusual list of features, outstanding performance and a very reasonable price tag. The 28-200mm equivalent optical zoom and anti-shake system make it unique, and the exceptionally good macro performance is an added bonus. Picture quality could be better, but on the whole not bad.
