Nikon Coolpix P2 Review

Review Summary
Reader Score: 6.33 (out of 10)
The Nikon Coolpix P2 is a five megapixel digital camera with a 3.5x optical zoom lens. In terms of features this is a fairly standard digital camera, but with one significant difference. The Coolpix P2 has technology built into it that allows you to transmit your images directly to your computer. There is no need to connect your camera using cables. This technology is called wi-fi. For the process to work the computer you use must also be wi-fi compatible. If you are not sure your computer is wi-fi compatible you will need to check with your computer supplier.

There is a lot to like about the Nikon Coolpix P2. I was impressed by the picture quality it produces and it is also the first consumer camera to offer wi-fi. Incorporating this latest technology understandably increases the price and you will need to decide how important this is to you before you go ahead and buy this camera.

As digital compacts go, the P2 (and its 8-megapixel brother, the otherwise identical P1) is a tad underwhelming to look at, with 'traditional' styling lines making it look a plain Jane when compared to many of the style driven ultra compact models on the market. In terms of image quality, the one image quality downside is some intrusive noise in shadows, even at ISO 100 and with the noise reduction mode activated. Otherwise, the P2 provides a comprehensive package of metering (spot, centre-weighted and matrix) AF modes, burst shooting (up to 30fps) and an interval shooting mode. Slight underexposure seemed the norm but otherwise the image quality is exemplary, crisp, and colourful and with exposure compensation and D-Lighting as back-up, the images were superb.

"First megapixels increased. Then cameras began to shrink. Next LCDs ballooned in size while batteries eked out just a few more shots. Each new generation of camera saw one additional scene mode or on-camera image enhancement feature. To be blunt it hasn't been so interesting. What is needed is a feature that really raises eyebrows and the Nikon Coolpix P2 has it: Wi-Fi access for picture transfers. Nikon certainly wasn't the first, but they were likely a close second or third. Adding wireless connectivity just makes sense and should make photography easier. But does it? Read on.

This Coolpix is extremely small and light. This used to be a hindrance in the past for cameras. Small size equated to small features. Not so anymore. The P2 is loaded. 5 Megapixels, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, a multitude of scene modes, a 30 fps movie mode, and a 2.5" LCD. Just six months ago to find a 2.5" LCD was to find the pirate's treasure. Today it is - thankfully - as common as FM radio in a new car.

The Nikon P2 is an excellent camera with a long features list, large LCD, above average movie mode, and wonderful wireless. With the exception of some hiccups getting wireless in gear and a strange and non-intuitive interface, I can recommend the P2 for its simplicity and picture quality."

"The Nikon Coolpix P2 bears a superficial resemblance to the Coolpix 7900, with all automatic controls and an extremely small form factor. But there's no optical viewfinder, the flash has been repositioned, and the LCD has grown to 2.5-inches. - And of course, there's the built-in wireless capability.

Image quality and resolution are both first-rate, making the Coolpix P2 a good choice for anyone who wants an easy-to-use camera that delivers good-looking pictures with pleasing color and plenty of resolution. Overall, a good choice for the point & shoot user looking for an easy to use, compact digital camera with a surprising range of capabilities."

Megapixel ----- 11-15-05 Read Full Review
The Nikon Coolpix P2 is a member of yet another dual release, its partner being the P1, an identical camera, but one with an 8-megapixel resolution to the P2's 5.1 megapixel. Both these cameras come equipped with Wi-Fi capability (IEEE802.11b/g), allowing them to access, and be accessed, wirelessly.

The Coolpix P2's noise reduction system doubles the time necessary for the image to be recorded, capturing a dark frame with the same exposure time after the photo has been taken, and then using the noise captured with the dark frame to process it out of the first exposure.

While this process can lessen the overall sharpness of an image, it is not the case here and with the zoom set to the equivalent of 57mm, the photo is sharp.
